Champions League Acca – 15th & 16th February
The Champions League is back this week and we are at the Round of 16 stage of the competition.
However, given that the Europa League and Europa Conference League still have 24 teams left competing in them, compared to 16 in the Champions League, the first and second leg ties for the eight games are split, with four first leg games this week, four next week and then the second leg ties are also staggered a couple of weeks later.
The upshot of this is that for each of those game days, we don’t end up with any choice of games for the acca, unless of course we decide to pick games from another competition, such as the EPL or similar, if there are any games scheduled to be played on the same nights.
However, I’m not too bothered about that. I think keeping things with the Champions League won’t be too much of a problem, but it will likely mean that the odds of these accas are not the biggest, as is shown by this week’s selection of games.
And what a game we have to kick things off as PSG take on Real Madrid in Paris and on the same night Manchester City face Sporting Lisbon.
Then the following night Red Bull Salzburg host Bayern Munich, while Inter Milan take on Liverpool in what should be a cracking first leg tie at the San Siro, especially after the Reds have already won there this season when beating Milan 2-1 in the Champions League Group Stage.
Let’s now take a look at this week’s games and what the tips are for them.
What a game to kick of proceedings with two teams that will feel they have genuine hopes of winning this trophy meeting up in Paris. The home side will start as the favourites to win the game, despite only finishing second in their group behind Manchester City. Real Madrid though have won just two of their last five games and they have proven fallible this season, losing to Sheriff Tiraspol at home in the Group Stages. With PSG so far clear (16 points) in Ligue 1, their focus will now be on this trophy and I think that they will do enough to take a good lead with them into the second leg in Madrid in three week’s time.
Sporting Lisbon v Manchester City – Away Win
Sporting Lisbon were held 2-2 by FC Porto in a fractious domestic game at the weekend, and after finishing second to Ajax in the group stage of this competition, their reward is a game against Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s team have got a big lead in the Premier League and so will be focused on ending their long wait for a Champions League trophy after falling short in all their attempts so far. Lisbon is not an easy place to go, but this Manchester City side is strong enough to go there and land a win that should make the second leg of this game in early March something of a formality at the Etihad.
Bet Analysis: Wednesday 16th February
Red Bull Salzburg v Bayern Munich – Away Win
Red Bull Salzburg have seen a number of their supremely talented players move on in recent years, but they still keep finding plenty of talent and that has been enough for them to come through the Group Stages to land a plum tie against Bayern Munich. The Germans are recent winners of this trophy and they are amongst the favourites this year too, however their recent form has shown a few blips, including this weekend’s shock defeat to VfL Bochum in the Bundesliga. In Europe though Bayern have been perfect so far this season and I think that they are likely to continue that good form by landing the win here.
Inter Milan v Liverpool – Away Win
Inter Milan have had a good season so far, topping Serie A and coming through their Champions League group behind Real Madrid. However, they face a Liverpool side that won all their six group games and who have already beaten rivals AC Milan home and away this season. That’s not to say Inter will struggle here, I think they have more than enough talent to give Liverpool a real game, especially at the San Siro, but Liverpool have been in great form of late and with Salah and Mane back, Luis DIaz signed and so many players coming back from injury, this is looking to be a tough one for the Italians and I think the visitors may just edge the win.
