Champions League Acca – 8th & 9th March

We’re back with the Champions League this week and it has worked out such that finding a longer odds bet on this selection of games is almost impossible, unless you wanted to go for some very outlandish and against the stats selections.

With Liverpool and Manchester City both having very solid away wins in the first leg in their games, plus Bayern Munich now facing Red Bull Salzburg at home, the obvious selections in these games are very very short prices with all bookmakers.

That means that the only value available comes in the Real Madrid v PSG game, but even that isn’t enough for this accumulator to be a big price. In fact, it may well be the shortest price accumulator bet that I have put together.

However, on the flip side of that, it does mean that the bookmakers feel that the bet has a very good chance of success compared to some of the others that I could have made.

I mean, I can get odds of 1,405/1 if I put together an acca with Salzburg beating Bayern and Sporting beating Manchester City, but how likely is that to happen?

When we have selections like that, you can’t really force things and look for a stunning upset; they do happen but are so rare, especially in the Champions League, that finding them and backing them is almost impossible.

So with that in mind, here’s my selections for this week’s games and I bet the only one that may surprise you is the last one.

Bet Analysis: Tuesday 8th March

Bayern Munich (1) v (1) Red Bull Salzburg – Home Win

The first leg of this tie was something of a surprise with Bayern earning a draw in the last minute of the game thanks to Kingsley Coman’s strike. Salzburg had dealt with the German side well and led for the majority of the game and they at least go into the away leg on level terms. Bayern at home though are a very tough side to beat, but they are fallible and have lost a few more games this season than they are used to domestically. Salzburg are a tricky side and I feel they will likely score a goal here, but I still feel that Bayern have too much quality for the Austrian side and the home team should land a win here to progress.

Liverpool (2) v (0) Inter Milan – Home Win

Liverpool had a few awkward moments in the first leg in Milan but goals from Firmino and Salah saw them earn a huge 2-0 win and left Inter with a mountain to climb against a team that has won all their last 11 games. The Italians have won just two of their last eight but did beat Salernitana 5-0 on Saturday to set them up well for this game. However, Anfield is a tough ask for any team in Europe, even the very best have struggled there over the years and it is hard to see Inter winning this game, let alone by three goals. Liverpool have won every game in the Champions League this season and I think they’ll continue that record here.

Bet Analysis: Wednesday 9th March

Man City (5) v (0) Sporting Lisbon – Home Win

The first leg of this tie could have been embarrassing for Sporting Lisbon. City scored five goals in the first 58 minutes and they had another two goals ruled out through VAR in that time and they effectively took their foot of the pedal in the last 30 minutes to cruise to a 5-0 win. What do Lisbon do here? Do they go for it and risk being humiliated? Sit back and defend and risk being humiliated? I don’t really know what their manager will say to them here other than avoid another thrashing. As such, it’s no surprise I’m going for the home win here, it is just a question of how many City will score and if the first leg is anything to go by, it may be a fair few.

Real Madrid (0) v (1) Paris St Germain – Away Win

So there’s no surprises in my selections so far for this week’s Champions League games, but there is perhaps one here as I am backing PSG to land the win away to Real Madrid. The first leg was tight and PSG bossed the game against a very defensive minded Real side. However, in the home leg, Real have to come out of their shell to try and get the goal to level the tie and that extra space the PSG forward line will have could well be their undoing. I think Messi and Neymar, plus the pace of Mbappe will cause havoc for Madrid on the counter and I think that PSG will secure a narrow win to reach the next round.
