Champions League Acca – 9th & 10th March
The Champions League is back this week with the second leg of four of the Round of 16 ties taking place across Tuesday and Wednesday evening. The action kicks off with Dortmund taking a narrow 3-2 lead from the away leg into their home game with Sevilla.
At the same time, Italian champions Juventus will be hoping they can turn around a 2-1 deficit from the first leg on home soil against Portuguese side FC Porto.
Then on Wednesday night Paris St Germain will host Barcelona after a stunning performance in the Nou Camp saw the French side earn a 4-1 victory, thanks ostensibly to a stunning hat-trick from Kylian Mbappe. Barcelona now face a massive task if they are to avoid being eliminated at this stage of the competition and they have to do that in Paris too.
Lastly, Liverpool are back in action in Hungary once again as they play the second leg of their tie with German side Red Bull Leipzig. The German side uncharacteristically handed Liverpool two goals in their ‘home’ leg in Hungary a couple of weeks back but in a tie which is effectively being played at a neutral venue, and given Liverpool’s woeful form of late, this is likely a match that is not over.
Once again, we have gone through all four games and put them together into an accumulator which we have outlined below. We’re due a win after a couple of near misses in the last few weeks, let’s hope this midweek Champions League acca does the trick for us.
There once was a time when Seville was one of the toughest places to go and get a win in all of Europe but this season Chelsea have won 4-1 there and last time out, Dortmund earned a fine 3-2 win in the away leg. The Germans then surrendered a 2-0 lead at the weekend to lose 4-2 to Bayern Munich so they will know that this game takes on added importance. Playing on the counter attack may well suit Seville more than playing at home, so I do feel they will stand a good chance of scoring a goal here. My concern for them is that the Dortmund attack is so talented that they should score enough to win the game on the night and also progress into the quarterfinals.
Juventus (1) v (2) FC Porto – Home Win
I did tip Juventus to get something from the home leg with Porto, but I have to admit that the Portuguese side surprised me with how well they played and fully deserved the lead they take into the second leg. Ordinarily, with Cristiano Ronaldo, I’d back Juventus to come through every time here, especially only needing a 1-0 win, but I do worry for them a little here. They have not been their dominant selves in Serie A this season, defensively they can concede and I just have the feeling this could well be a tough night for the Italians, even though I am still tipping them to win. They may need extra time or even penalties to progress despite that victory.
Bet Analysis: Wednesday 10th March
Paris St Germain (4) v (1) Barcelona – Home Win
I have to admit to being stunned by how clinical and efficient Paris St Germain were in the first leg of this game. To win in the Nou Camp is one thing, to win 4-1, in particular without Neymar, was something else. Kylian Mbappe stole the show in that game with a superb hattrick and I think the tie is now effectively over as there is no way I can see Barcelona winning this game 4-0. In truth it could well be another long night for the Spanish side as I think Mbappe, Icard and Kean will cause them plenty of problems and that energetic midfield will likely have the legs on the Catalan side once again. Don’t be surprised if Paris win this one well too.
Liverpool (2) v (0) Red Bull Leipzig – Draw
I don’t for one moment believe this tie is over. Last season or the season before, yes, I’d have backed another Liverpool win without hesitation but given the Reds issues of late, even if this ‘home’ game isn’t a real home match, I am still not confident they will pick up another win here. Leipzig gifted Liverpool two goals in that first leg and they won’t be so generous here. I can see the German side taking the lead but I do feel that Liverpool, with the pressure of winning at Anfield not being evident, may do enough to earn an equaliser and that goal will I think kill off the tie. As such, I am going to back the draw here.
