Champions League Acca Tip – 14th & 15th March 2023

We’re back this week with the final set of matches in the Champions League Round of 16 second leg. After this week, all three European competitions will be at the quarterfinal stages and from then on, it is a much simpler and easier format to follow right the way through to the finals of each competition in May/June.

Last week we saw Chelsea, AC Milan, Benfica and Bayern Munich make it through into the quarterfinals after they came through their second leg ties with the the result they needed to progress.

That meant Club Brugge, Borussia Dortmund, Tottenham and, most surprisingly, Paris St Germain were the teams eliminated from the tournament.

This week we have the final four games which features two more Premier League teams, Manchester City (who face Red Bull Leipzig) and Liverpool (who have a daunting trip to Spain to face Real Madrid) as well as two Serie A sides in action as Napoli face Eintracht Frankfurt in Naples, while Inter travel to Portugal to take on FC Porto.

It promises to be a very intriguing set of games and I have given you my tip for each below.

Bet Analysis: Tuesday 14th March

FC Porto (0) v (1) Inter Milan – Home Win

Inter Milan took advantage of the second half sending off of Otavio of FC Porto to press home that extra man advantage and secure a victory with an 86th minute winner from Romelu Lukaku in what was a game the Italian side dominated in terms of possession but struggled to break down a tough Porto defensive action. I expect the home side to be much more on the offensive in this second leg, but I do feel the influence of Otavio will be greatly missed as he serves his suspension here. That said, the Portuguese side have played Inter twice at home and never lost, winning one and drawing one and their form is pretty good of late. Inter have had better form too, but their away form in Europe is a little erratic and I feel this one will see FC Porto land a narrow win, but we may need extra time and penalties to see who goes through.

Manchester City (1) v (1) Red Bull Leipzig – Home Win

After a tight draw in Germany, Manchester City will head into this game on the back of a narrow win away to Crystal Palace which has cut their deficit behind Arsenal in that competition to two points, albeit having played a game more. Games between these two teams do usually produce goals at both ends, in the three games they have played both teams have scored in each one, but City were 6-3 victors in the home game between the two in the Group Stages of this competition a few years back and while I can’t see the same kind of scoreline here, I do feel it is a good bet that both teams will score again here, but I think it will be Manchester City that progress as I think they will outscore the German side at home.

Bet Analysis: Wednesday 15th March

Napoli (2) v (0) Eintracht Frankfurt – Home Win

Napoli are, for me anyways, the best team in Europe at the moment. I have been so impressed with them all season long and they cruised to a 2-0 win away from home against the Europa League winners in the first leg here which should set up the second leg to be a formality. Lazio did beat Napoli in Naples recently, but only by a 1-0 scoreline and I can’t see Frankfurt being able to replicate that kind of result, and even if they did, it would not be enough. Napoli have so many good attacking players here and I think that they will stroll to a pretty confident home win to add to their away victory to move into the quarterfinals very comfortably indeed.

Real Madrid (5) v (2) Liverpool – Home Win

The other game on Wednesday night sees Liverpool with an almost impossible task at hand after losing the home leg to Real Madrid 5-2 at Anfield. Incredibly, the Reds were 2-0 up in that game early on, but Real struck back in emphatic fashion to land a comprehensive win and one that leaves Liverpool seemingly with a futile task of turning this tie around. We know they came back from 3-0 down to beat Barcelona a few years ago, but that was at Anfield, this is in the Bernebeu, where their recent record is very poor indeed. So with Real Madrid seemingly having the upper hand in the games between the two, having a pretty much full-strength squad to pick from as well as home advantage, I think the most likely outcome here is another home win as I cannot see any way that Liverpool will score at least four goals to win this one.
