Champions League Acca Tip – 16th & 17th February

This coming week we have the return of the Champions League and the Europa League to the calendar. We start on Tuesday and Wednesday night with two games each evening from the Champions League Round of 16 first leg games. The second set of four are played next week at the same time.

What we have done is gone through the four games being played this week in the Champions League and created our own accumulator from those games. What makes this exciting is that there are a number of very even contests this week, which has helped inflate the value of the odds on the bet.

There’s just one Premier League team in action this week and that is struggling Liverpool. They face a trip to Hungary to take on Red Bull Leipzig, after the game was moved from Germany. That could be a lucky move for the Reds given that Leipzig have beaten Manchester United and Paris St Germain at home in this competition this season.

We also have PSG in action in a fantastic game against Barcelona, while in Wednesday’s matches we have Juventus making a trip to Portugal to face FC Porto, while Borussia Dortmund will head to Spain to take on Sevilla.

It should be an exciting week of action with that quartet of games and I am hopeful, after going close in last week’s midweek FA Cup games, that we are getting closer to that elusive next big win. It would be very nice if this set of tips came in to give us that bumper return!

Here’s my tips for this week’s games.

Bet Analysis: Tuesday 16th February

Barcelona v Paris St Germain – Draw

What a cracking game to kick things off in the Champions League this week. Ronald Koeman’s Barcelona are nowhere near as talented as some of the famous Barcelona teams of the past and I think their struggles this season, despite better form of late, means that this is going to be a huge test for them. PSG have had their issues domestically too, and with Neymar injured they could be down a key player, but I still feel they are the better of the two teams. However, their record in Spain is pretty dismal, especially against Barcelona and as such, I don’t think they will land a win here, but I do feel they are good enough to keep things level heading into the second leg in Paris in three weeks time.

Red Bull Leipzig v Liverpool – Draw

This game will take place in Hungary at the Puskas Arena due to travel restrictions meaning Leipzig can’t play this on home soil. That is a real blow for them as they have been excellent on home soil in this competition in recent times. It is also a boost for a Liverpool side that has been struggling in recent weeks, especially at home. The Champions League is likely both sides only realistic chance of silverware this season given their domestic situation and in truth, I think the Reds have more chance of getting a positive result here than at Anfield. Hence I am backing them to come away with a share of the spoils on Tuesday night.

Bet Analysis: Wednesday 17th February

FC Porto v Juventus – Away Win

Pretty much every year I have compiled tips on the Round of 16 in the Champions League these two teams have been involved and while Juventus tend to go on to reach the later stages of the tournament, this tends to be the point at which FC Porto bow out of the competition and in truth, over the two legs I see that happening again. Juventus are by far the better and more experienced of the two sides in this competition. Cristiano Ronaldo is the highest ever scorer in it and while Juventus have not been as dominant in Serie A as in previous years, I have a feeling they may go well in this year’s Champions League. I’m backing Juventus to land a narrow win on the road here.

Sevilla v Borussia Dortmund – Home Win

Dortmund won their group so you would think that given that and the fact that they have so many attacking players, they would be the favourites to land the win here, but I don’t agree with that. Sevilla are a very talented side who have an exceptionally strong spine of players, allied to some talented wide players. They have been more consistent than Dortmund this season and while they perhaps lack some of the star names of the German side, their general form is much better. They are also very tough to beat at home in European competition. As such, I think this will be the game that does see the home side land a victory to take into the second leg in Germany.
