Champions League Acca – Tue 12th & Wed 13th March

I know I normally do separate midweek accas for Tuesday and Wednesday but in truth, I wasn’t overly enamoured with the selections available this week or last week to do two sets of tips and with neither panning out last week, I have instead combined the two remaining Champions League Round of 16 second leg matches across Tuesday and Wednesday nights this week into a single fourfold accumulator.

This weeks games are a real mix of matches with the most intriguing encounter on Tuesday being the game in Turin where Juventus, who are still unbeaten in Serie A and who have dropped just six points all season long, have to claw back a 2-0 deficit to Spanish aces Atletico Madrid. In the other game that night, Manchester City take on Schalke at the Etihad leading 3-2 from the first leg in Germany in what was a dramatic and often controversial first leg tie in Gelsenkirchen.

Then on Wednesday we have the two games that saw both first legs encounters finish 0-0. Barcelona face Lyon at the Nou Camp knowing any win would put them through and they should be confident of doing precisely that, despite a surprise loss at home to Girona recently. Bayern Munich will also feel they have the edge having held Liverpool at Anfield but the Reds dangerous counter attack will be something that the German side, who won 6-0 at the weekend, will be wary of.

After last weeks four games were filled with shocks, which saw three away team victories and the elimination of Real Madrid, Dortmund, AS Roma and Paris St Germain, will these fixtures go the way of the home teams as the bookies expect or will there be a few twists and turns?

Here’s my tips for this weeks games.

Bet Analysis: Tuesday 12th March

Juventus (0) v (2) Atletico Madrid – Draw

Two second half goals last week handed Atletico a massive advantage heading into the game in Turin and Juventus now know that they are up against it if they want to progress into the next round. The Italian side were lacklustre in Madrid and I think they’ll want to put that right here. However, if one side is equipped to go to Turin, defend and hit Juventus on the counter when it hurts, moreso than any other, it is Atletico and because of that, I don’t think this will be a straightforward home win. I can see Atletico grabbing the opening goal and Juventus striking back but I am backing the Spaniards to hang on for a draw to progress into the next phase.

Manchester City (3) v (2) Schalke 04 – Home Win

The first leg between these teams was hugely controversial with Manchester City coming off worse when it came to some VAR decisions, which saw them reduced to 10-men and also 2-1 down to Schalke. However two late goals from City saw them snatch a lead which should make the second leg at the Etihad a formality, although the way things went last week in this competition you can never be sure. It’s hard to see how Schalke, on the road, have a chance here against the in form City who come into the game in superb form and I would expect them not just to progress into the next round of the competition, but to do so very comfortably too by winning handsomely on the night.

Barcelona (0) v (0) Lyon – Home Win

The first leg between these teams finished all square in France three weeks ago and since then Barcelona have suffered a rare home defeat to Girona. Lyon have won two, drawn one and lost one of their four games since and it is worth noting that they did beat Manchester City in Manchester in the Group Stage of this tournament. It would certainly be very interesting if Lyon could get the first goal in this game but I feel that Barcelona will be very much up for this game, especially now with Real Madrid eliminated from the tournament and I would expect the Catalan side to make it through, although there could be one or two nervous moments for them on the night.

Bayern Munich(0) v (0) Liverpool – Draw

Bayern dominated the first leg of this game at Anfield in terms of possession but Liverpool probably had the better of the chances but it is the German side who will be happiest heading into the second leg at 0-0, although the lack of an away goal may worry the Germans. Bayern are in great form though at the moment and thumped Wolfsburg at the weekend in the warm up to this game. Liverpool played on Sunday so won’t have had as much time to prepare and they have lost all their last four Champions League away games. The form and stats do seem to favour Bayern but something tells me there is going to be a twist in this one and so I am going to back the draw here and perhaps all four of the English teams to make it into the quarterfinals.
