Champions League Acca – Tue 1st & Wed 2nd December
I must admit to being a bit frustrated with my acca tips of late. A short time ago, I hit both tips one one Saturday, but Sunday let me down, then this past weekend, I missed out on Saturday, but both Sunday came in. I have also had a real near miss with a midweek Champions and Europa League selections with just one of my four selections letting me down on a couple of occasions.
To say I can almost touch that big money win is an understatement. It definitely feels like it is coming.
Maybe it will come this week, although I do think this is a tougher selection of games to predict for reasons that will become clear when we look at the games individually below. There are some cracking games to enjoy in the Champions League on Matchday 5 with plenty of attention on the two home games for two Premier League sides, Liverpool (who face Ajax) and Manchester United (who face a crunch game against Paris St Germain at Old Trafford).
We’ve also focused on two British sides who are already through, Man City face a tricky trip to Porto while Chelsea renew rivalries with Sevilla with both of those teams already confirmed as through to the Round of 16. Does this mean we will see all the teams qualified rest players in what has been a very hectic three months since the start of the season? I think that is likely and that does impact the chances of some games turning out as you would expect.
Other big games include Real Madrid’s crunch match with Shakhtar Donetsk, Dortmund facing Lazio and Atletico Madrid taking on Bayern Munich. As I said, it is a week which does see its fair share of mouthwatering clashes between many of Europe’s top sides.
Here’s my tips for Tuesday and Wednesday night’s action in the Champions League and remember to check back Thursday morning from 9am for my Europa League tips too.
I do feel Jurgen Klopp made a rare mistake last week in the home defeat to Atalanta. His very weakened team selection handed the initiative to the Italians and they deservedly made Liverpool pay. Liverpool won’t want to go to Denmark to face Midtjylland needing a win in their final game to be sure of progressing but Ajax have hit form, winning all of their last five games and this is going to be a tough one. I expect to see all the big guns rolled out for Liverpool here and even with their issues in defence, and Ajax’s excellent form on the road in Europe in past seasons, I still think the Reds will do enough to claim the win.
FC Porto v Manchester City – Away Win
This was a much tougher call than it appears when you look at the group. Porto need just one point to be assured of a place in the next phase (they are almost certain to progress anyway, given the goal difference between them and Olympiakos being 10 different) and I can see Man City perhaps resting some key men in this game given thet they have already qualified. However City will not want to finish second in the group and even a weakened Man City team will still have plenty of top class talent. Porto were well beaten at the Etihad and while they won’t be thumped again here, I still feel even a weakened City should have enough to claim the win.
Bet Analysis: Wednesday 2nd December
Man Utd v Paris St Germain – Away Win
Manchester United’s big win over Istanbul Basaksehir was a crucial one for them but their defeat in Turkey before that may still loom large in this group. United need a draw from either of their last two games to be assured of qualifying for the next phase but in those games they face Leipzig next week on the road and PSG at home this week. The French side were very poor when losing to United earlier in the competition but with Neymar and Mbappe now back fit and their form much improved, I think they are going to cause United plenty of problems here and I can see them landing a win which would put United in a tricky position ahead of their final group game in Germany next week.
Sevilla v Chelsea – Home Win
Both of these teams have qualified for the next phase so I do expect both managers to give their regulars a rest here, especially Chelsea. However, you cannot discount Sevilla’s home record against English teams or their fine start to the season in La Liga too. With both sides likely to be weaker, I think this tends to favour the home side over the visitors and with Sevilla’s excellent record against English teams, I am backing them to win this one narrowly.
