Champions League Accumulator – 16th & 17th March

We had a real mixed bag of tips last week in midweek. The Champions League selections performed miserably and I was really disappointed, especially when some of the results I was tempted into tipping. However, we were then very unlucky in the Europa League where 3/4 landed and we just needed Slavia Prague to beat Rangers for a win of well over £220.

That was a bit frustrating, especially as Slavia grabbed the lead early in the game, but at least that set of tips was close and banishes the poor result of the Champions League into a distant memory. It also gives me some positive confidence heading into this set of tips for the Champions League.

We know from last weeks second leg ties that it is Borussia Dortmund, FC Porto, Liverpool and Paris St Germain who will progress into the quarterfinals of the competition. Two big names already dumped out are Barcelona and Juventus, while last year’s semifinalists, Red Bull Leipzig didn’t make it either.

For this weeks tips though, all I will say here is don’t get that private jet purchase booked quite yet!  The way that the fixtures have turned out mean that this is going to be one of the shortest priced accumulator bets I have done in a good while!

Looking through the fixtures, they all look pretty much certain to be home bankers, with the exception of just one game (and even that, the home team holds a lead from the first leg).

However, the upside of this is that it should mean that we have a very good chance of landing a win with this selection, so let’s take a look at it in a bit more detail now. All games kick off, as per usual, at 8pm starting on Tuesday with the first two and the final two games in the Round of 16 in the Champions League taking place on Wednesday night.

Bet Analysis: Tuesday 16th March

Man City (2) v (0) Borussia Monchengladbach – Home Win

Manchester City were very comfortable winners of the first leg of this tie, earning a 2-0 victory and in truth, they could and should have won by more goals. I cannot see this tie, which will be played on neutral territory in the Puskas Arena, as being any different to the first leg. City have a comfortable lead in the Premier League so can rest players in their remaining games if they want to in that competition. Borussia are a strong side and have beaten some big teams in recent years but I think they are in for another emphatic defeat in the second leg here.

Real Madrid (1) v (0) Atalanta – Home Win

There are two games in this weeks selection that I felt did have the chance for an upset and this is the first of them. Real Madrid are third in La Liga but have found scoring goals a problem this season. They did go to Italy and beat Atalanta in the away leg, but I am reminded of how Atalanta did against Liverpool here, where the Reds comfortably beat the Italians in Italy, but at Anfield, Atalanta were worthy winners and with that win earned a shot at Real Madrid. I have no doubt this young, attack minded side can cause Real problems, especially if they don’t go down to ten men after 17 minutes as happened in the first leg. That said, you rarely back Real to lose at home and I am backing their experience to be the telling factor here.

Bet Analysis: Wednesday 17th March

Bayern Munich (4) v (1) Lazio  – Home Win

At one point early in the second half, this looked like being an absolute drubbing for Lazio as Bayern were scoring with almost every attack they had. However a Correa strike handed some respectability to the scoreline and the Italians kept Bayern out the rest of the game. However, it is a small victory in the scheme of things as I can only see Bayern dominating the second leg in Munich and likely winning by a similar scoreline to the first leg to complete a comprehensive win. here.

Chelsea (1) v (0) Atletico Madrid – Home Win

This was the other game where I felt Atletico could cause a surprise. They are leading La Liga and have the players to cause any defence in the world problems and it is worth remembering that they were the team that eliminated Liverpool on their own ground last season in this competition. The difference here though is that Chelsea hold a lead from the first leg and that is vital. That means Atletico have to come out and attack at some point and cannot just sit back and defend, which they prefer to do. That I think offers Chelsea a chance to hurt Atletico themselves and Thomas Tuchel’s side have been capable of doing that in big games of late. As such, I think Chelsea scrape this one by a single goal to progress.
