Champions League Accumulator – 7th & 8th December

No luck with our weekend acca this week but I’m not too worried having landed one in the week for over £200 profit. Add that to the other one I landed earlier this season and I reckon one more similar value win will ensure we see profit this season.

Not bad for early December, but I want to get myself ensured of a profit as quickly as possible and this week’s final set of Group Stage games in the Champions League gives me a good chance to do precisely that.

We have a whole host of teams this week that could well elect to play weakened teams in their final game, especially those like Ajax, Liverpool, Manchester City and Bayern Munich who are all already confirmed as their group winners.

This is something that I do try to factor in on the last couple of weeks of action in both the Champions and Europa League games, so this week, you may well see that I focus on matches where at least one team still has something meaningful to play for in terms of qualification from the group stage.

Tuesday sees pretty much most things settled in those four groups, with just the team finishing second to Liverpool in Group B up for grabs, but there is much more at stake on Wednesday night with top spot in the group up for grabs in several games, plus Group G could see any of the four teams qualify for the knockout stage in these final games.

So with that in mind, I may well err towards picking the majority of games on Wednesday night given there is more at stake in more of those matches.

Let’s take a look at my picks this week.

Bet Analysis: Tuesday 7th December

Real Madrid v Inter Milan – Home Win

There is not much riding on this game in terms of qualification – both teams have already qualified from Group D, but the winner of this game, or Real Madrid if the game is a draw, will top the group and with that comes a seeded spot in the Round of 16 draw in December, which could be crucial to that team’s chances of getting a favourable opponent in the next phase. Inter’s form has seen them win all their last three in this competition but Real have done likewise after their shock home loss to Sheriff Tiraspol, who are already assured of the Europa League spot. With home advantage and not wanting to take any chances, I am backing Real to land the win here.

Bet Analysis: Wednesday 8th December

Bayern Munich v Barcelona – Home Win

Barcelona have it all to do in this game. A draw or defeat could well mean they are eliminated if Benfica can beat Dynamo Kyiv at home and Bayern beat Barcelona 3-0 at the Nou Camp on matchday 1. In fact the Germans have won all the last three games, conceding just 4 goals in that time and scoring 14. With Barcelona also losing at home at the weekend, the pressure will be massively ramped up on Ronald Koeman if his team goes out of the tournament at this stage here. Bayern may rest players but I still feel they are going to be far too strong for this very average and out of sorts Barcelona team.

Red Bull Salzburg v Sevilla – Draw

I freely admit to expecting Sevilla to take control of this group, but that is not how it has turned out although a win for the Spanish side here would see them qualify, possibly as group winners. Salzburg were leading the group comfortably after three games, but two defeats in their last two has seen them come under real pressure in this game, and a point may just be enough for them to qualify by the skin of their teeth. I think this is exactly how this game is going to pan out.

Wolfsburg v Lille – Away Win

The other game in Group G takes place in Germany and if Wolfsburg win then they will likely take one of the qualification spots in the group, although this is a group where both sets of fans at both games will have their attention on the other match too.  Wolfsburg have not been in the best of form of late winning one of their last six and losing all their last three games in all competitions. The teams drew 0-0 on the opening matchday in a game Lille should have won. Only PSG have beaten them in their last nine games and I think they may spring a surprise and land the win here to confirm top spot in the group and a place in the next round.
