Champions League Accumulator: Tue 13th & Wed 14th February

Over the next few weeks, (four of the next five to be exact) the matches in the Round of 16 of the Champions League will be played. This round is somewhat fractured and elongated, with two of the eight Round of 16 matches played on each night. The first legs are played on 13th, 14th, 20th and 21st February with the second legs contested on the 6th, 7th, 13th and 14th of March.

Now this presents us with a bit of a dilemma as I don’t really like doing doubles as the odds on offer are usually very small. But I also don’t like to use matches on different nights for my accumulator’s on here. However in this case, I think that is the best option.

So for the Round of 16 games in the Champions League, each set of tips will cover two nights games, starting with the matches this week on the 13th and 14th of February. The first two games shown will take place on the 13th with the latter two on the 14th and I’ll use the same format throughout these four sets of tips.

There are three of the five English teams remaining in the competition in action this week and all are playing away from home with very different opponents to face. Man City have the easiest task on paper against FC Basel, followed by Liverpool who face Porto while Spurs have easily the most difficult job facing Juventus.

The other game this week is good enough to be the final itself with Real Madrid meeting Paris St Germain which will be an absolutely classic two-legged tie I’m sure.

Here’s my tips for the first legs of these games.

Bet Analysis: Tue 13th February

FC Basel v Manchester City – Away Win – Manchester City were probably very happy to be pitted against FC Basel in the draw for the Round of 16, avoiding some of the bigger names in Europe. However, it is wise not to underestimate a FC Basel team that have a good record against English clubs and who have already beaten Manchester United in this tournament this season on home soil. City though, despite some poorer away form of late, have generally been superb this season and Pep Guardiola’s men are the clear favourites not just to win this tie, but also to win the tournament overall. I don’t think City will have things all their own way on Tuesday night as Basel are a decent side and are well organised, but I do think the visitors will do enough to get the win and make the second leg a mere formality.

Juventus v Tottenham – Home Win – Tottenham face a very tricky task heading to Turin to take on a Juventus side that have won 14 of their last 15 games and in that period have conceded just one goal in what has been an incredible display of defensive fortitude. However, Spurs much-vaunted attack is going to be stronger than anything Juventus have faced in a good while and the visitors come into this game in great spirits having taken seven points from games with Man Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal in recent times. Spurs have been superb in the Champions League this season, but this is a huge ask against a Juventus team that is bang in form. I’m backing the home side to earn a very slim 1-goal win here to take into the second leg at Wembley.

Bet Analysis: Wed 14th February

FC Porto v Liverpool – Draw – Can Liverpool put their recent inconsistent form behind them as they face a trip to a Porto side that are unbeaten in their domestic league? Jurgen Klopp’s men have been brilliant at times in the Champions League this season (recording two 7-0 wins) but they have also been shambolic at times (such as in losing a 3-0 lead against Sevilla, to draw 3-3). FC Porto are more consistent but they too suffered poor results early in the tournament, especially a home loss to Besiktas. In terms of quality, Liverpool have the edge in players but Porto look to be a more consistent team and I think home advantage means they’ll get something from this game. I’m backing a few goals to be scored here and I think this one will go to Anfield with the teams all-square.

Real Madrid v Paris St Germain – Draw – A game that could well have been the final has seen holders Real Madrid, winners of the trophy the past two years, taking on Paris St Germain, a team yet to win the tournament but who have invested heavily in signing the players to enable them to do that. Of the two, PSG have undeniably had the better season both domestically and in the Champions League, but Real Madrid have this uncanny knack of being able to get key results in the competition when they need to. I think the bookmakers are perhaps being drawn a little too far towards PSG’s chances here as this is a game I can see ending all-square, and then Real perhaps squeaking through on away goals in the French capital. As such, I am backing this one to end in an entertaining score draw.
