Champions League Matchday 1 Acca – 6th & 7th September

This week sees the return of European action and we kick off with the first round of matches in the Group Stage of the Champions League on Tuesday and Wednesday night.

Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham from the Premier League, plus Celtic and Rangers from the Scottish Premier League will hold the most interest for British fans especially in the Group that sees Liverpool and Rangers facing off against each other (which also includes Ajax and Napoli).

Of course, the holders Real Madrid will lead a strong Spanish contingent in the tournament and you can never rule out the teams from Serie A, the Bundesliga and the big spending Paris St Germain from Ligue 1.

The bookies have Manchester City as the pre-group stage favourites with the Citizens comfortably ahead of the likes of PSG, Liverpool and Bayern Munich in the betting.

The draw for the Group Stage has seen a number of big teams drawn together which will produce some classic games in the group stage between some of European football’s big guns.

Remembering back to last season, the Champions League did land me a couple of winners over the course of the campaign but I’d like to land a couple more. Nothing better than keeping the bookies on their toes!

So, here we go with this week’s set of tips for Matchday 1.

Bet Analysis: Tuesday 6th September

Celtic v Real Madrid – Away Win

Celtic warmed up for this test against the current European Champions with a 4-0 home win over rivals Rangers and that will stand them in good stead here. Real are the class act though but they have slipped up in the Group Stages in the last few years, losing to Sheriff Tiraspol last season and struggling in the group the year before that. Celtic may feel that will give them hope and certainly, a packed Celtic park with a feverish atmosphere could give them a chance, but with the quality Real Madrid have at their disposal, especially in attack were Vinicius Jr and Benzema were so important in their success last season, means that I think Real will be tested but ultimately will come away with the win.

Sevilla v Manchester City – Away Win

Sevilla have had an unusually slow start to the season in Serie A and they didn’t have an easy warm up for this fixture as they welcomed Barcelona to the Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan on Saturday night. They will face a Manchester City side who will be disappointed after earning only a 1-1 draw away to Aston Villa at the weekend, a result which denied them the chance to leapfrog Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table. However, City have been excellent against Sevilla, a team many other British sides have struggled against, winning both their games against the Spaniards and I think that they have far too much against an out of sorts Sevilla and will claim the win here.

Bet Analysis: Wednesday 7th September

Napoli v Liverpool – Home Win

Napoli have started well in Serie A but they had a tricky game away to Lazio in advance of this game, but by the same token, Liverpool travelled to local rivals Everton for an exciting but eventually goalless draw. The Reds have not won an away game so far this season and that will be a worry for their fans as they travel to a ground in Italy where they have never won, drawing one and losing two of their three games at the Diego Maradona stadium. Napoli will feel that they can cause this Liverpool side problems and I see Liverpool having some issues here given their injury worries, hence I am backing Napoli to land a shock win.

Tottenham v Marseille – Home Win

Tottenham could face. up to four ex-Arsenal players in this game as Marseille could call on Matteo Guendouzi, Sead Kolasinac, Alexis Sanchez and the on loan Nuno Tavares for this game. Add to that plenty of talent in the shape of Veretout and the super-talented Dmitri Payet and you have a Marseille team that could cause Spurs a few problems. The French side have started the season well and went top of the table at the weekend after a 2-0 away win over Auxerre. Spurs will have to be at their best to win this one and I do feel that they have the quality to do that, but it may well be a much closer game than many people expected.
