Champions League Matchday 2 Acca – 13th & 14th September

Well, after a very nice win last week of over £110, I am very happy with how my first set of tips in the Champions League panned out and while we couldn’t follow it up in the Europa League, and the weekend’s Premier League games were postponed, I am still pretty confident heading into this second set of European games.

We start with Matchday 2 of the Champions League group stages and there are some key games, not least for British teams, four of whom took a bit of a pasting in this competition last week.

Chelsea lost 1-0 in Zagreb, a result that cost Thomas Tuchel his job, and then Celtic were well beaten by Real Madrid at Celtic Park, while Liverpool went down to a 4-1 defeat to Napoli (and it could have been much worse), while Rangers went down to a 4-0 loss away to Ajax.

Indeed only Man City and Spurs came away with wins last week for the British teams and that means that the four teams that lost, now face crucial games that they must ideally win, and at least not lose, this week in their second group game.

Key games for that see Celtic away to Donetsk, Rangers facing Napoli, Liverpool taking on Ajax and Chelsea at home to Red Bull Salzburg.

The biggest game of the week though sees Bayern Munich face Barcelona, with the German side inflicting some heavy defeats on the Spaniards in recent times, there’s no doubt Xavi will be hoping his new look side, with ex-Munich striker Robert Lewandowski leading the line, can gain some revenge for those heavy losses.

There’s also an intriguing game on Wednesday as Man City host Dortmund in a game between Erling Haaland’s current and previous clubs.

Here’s our selections for this week’s acca tip, let’s hope it is as good as last week!

Bet Analysis: Tuesday 12th September

Sporting Lisbon v Tottenham – Away Win

Both these teams got off to excellent starts in this competition, Sporting beating Frankfurt 3-0 away from home and Spurs earning a 2-0 win at home over Marseille. That win makes it appear that this will be a very tough evening for Spurs but I think the English team are good enough to land the win here. Lisbon’s best results have been away from home in this competition, they lost heavily to Man City last season at home, but drew 0-0 away. As such, I’d expect Spurs to land a narrow away win here to put them in control of the group.

Bayern Munich v Barcelona  – Draw

For me, this is the biggest game of the Champions League this week although it is not as important a game as some of the others being played. Both these teams won their opening fixture, so the pressure is off, but both will also want to win this group and as such, a victory here for either would be a big step towards achieving that aim. Bayern have handed Barcelona some heavy defeats in recent times, including in this competition last season, but this new Barcelona under Xavi is looking far better and they have ex-Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski spearheading their attack. As such, I think this one may be much closer and with Bayern drawing their last 3 Bundesliga games, I am going for a draw here too.

Bet Analysis: Wednesday 13th September

Shakhtar Donetsk v Celtic – Home Win

I have to admit that I was stunned at the ease with which Shakhtar Donetsk won their opening game against Red Bull Leipzig last week. The 4-1 win was all the more remarkable as Donetsk play their home games either in Lviv in the Ukraine League, or in Poland in the Champions League. Celtic went down to a 3-0 home defeat to current Champions League holders Real Madrid but for the first half at least, made life uncomfortable for the Spaniards. Donetsk may be ‘away’ despite being at home, but I think they are more than capable of getting a result here against Celtic, given how well they dismantled Red Bull Leipzig in their opener.

Juventus v Benfica – Home Win

I am very surprised to see Juventus at better than even money to win this home game against Benfica, and as such I have decided to go with this selection rather than Manchester City or any other of the British teams as I felt this offered us by far the best value. Certainly, this Juventus team is not as strong as some of the teams in the past and they have lost both times they faced Benfica previously, which was way back in 1967/68 season. However, they are playing at home and know defeat here will give them a huge mountain to climb to qualify and it is in these games Juventus tend to shine, so I am quite confident in them picking up a win against a solid Benfica team, but not one I’d consider capable of earning a win in Turin.
