Champions League Matchday 5 Acca – 25th, 26th October

Well, as I am writing this article both my Saturday tips have come in from the weekend and I am now awaiting how my Sunday tips pan out and if they do, then that will be a second acca win in the past few weeks, so I have my fingers crossed for things to go my way there.

However, moving on to next week, we have the first of two sets of tips this week as it is the fifth day of matches in the group stages of the Champions League on Tuesday and Wednesday and then on Thursday we have Matchday 5 in the Group Stages of the Europa League too.

In fact, it is a busy couple of weeks as the final matchday follows on next week and then there is just one further league game the following weekend before the season comes to a halt and the 32 World Cup qualifiers will gather to compete in Qatar.

I think we have already seen the effect of so many games being squeezed into the calendar with a number of teams seeing more than the usual number of players injured and I think that may well be exacerbated, especially when we get to the Christmas period when the domestic league’s restart.

This week though, our focus is UEFA’s main competitions and with a number of teams already assured of their place in the Knockout Phase of the Champions League, we may well see managers electing to rest some regular first teamers from games this week and that is something that will need to be considered for this set of tips.

Anyway, here’s the four games I’ve selected from the action on Tuesday and Wednesday night this week.

Bet Analysis: Tuesday 25th October

Benfica v Juventus – Home Win

Two teams that have had contrasting fortunes in this year’s Champions League. The Portuguese side have progressed on from their strong showing last season and they are unbeaten in this tough group and level on points with PSG having played the French Champions twice. They have also beaten Juventus in Turin earlier in the competition and with Juventus only win coming at home against Maccabi Haifa. The Italian side have endured a miserable season so far with their poor form in Europe also echoed at home. Massimo Allegri’s return has fallen far short of the superiority his team enjoyed in his first spell at the club and they now face an almost impossible task to reach the knockout phase of the competition here. As such, I am going for a Benfica victory here to confirm their spot in the Knockout Phase.

Borussia Dortmund v Manchester City – Draw

The last three games between these two teams have all finished in a 2-1 win for Manchester City, that includes two games at the Etihad and one in Dortmund. So, surely that is a recipe for another 2-1 win for City here too? I’m not so sure. City are already qualified for the knockout phase and with a busy few weeks ahead of the World Cup we have seen Pep Guardiola resting players for certain games in Europe and domestically too. As such, I think he may elect to rest one or two key players here which gives Dortmund a better chance. The German side have not yet confirmed qualification but a win here will likely make that a certainty however City have lost just once this season and I can’t see them losing here again. As such, a draw looks a solid option here.

Bet Analysis: Wednesday 26th October

Ajax Amsterdam v Liverpool – Draw

After suffering a shocking defeat away to Nottingham Forest at the weekend, Liverpool know that they need just to avoid defeat away to Ajax to cement their place in the knockout phase of the tournament and after a 7-1 win away to Rangers in their last game, they should be confident of getting something here, especially against an Ajax side resoundly beaten home and away by Napoli in their last two games. The Dutch side made it tough for Liverpool at Anfield and the Reds current form and injury crisis is a concern, but I am backing the visitors to do enough for the point they need here.

Barcelona v Bayern Munich – Away Win

A must-win game for Barcelona and even then it may not be enough and with Bayern already qualified, the Catalans will be hoping that they catch the German champions on an off day. However, Bayern’s recent record against Barcelona is incredibly good and the pace they have in attack means that I can see Barcelona’s back line, which was exposed cruelly by Inter and Real Madrid of late, could well struggle against that level of skill and pace. It won’t be an 8-2 win for Bayern as it was a couple of years back, but even so I expect them to maintain their 100% start in the group here.
