Champions League Matchday 6 Acca – 1st & 2nd November

We had a solid performance last week in the Champions League, but didn’t quite get the results we needed, ostensibly because Liverpool trounced Ajax on the road, which is a bit annoying considering the Reds have lost to Nottingham Forest and Leeds United either side of that game.

The other three games were on the money, which made it frustrating, but the good news is that I am back this week and given we have some Week 6 games, with teams that are already qualified, or eliminated, I think there is some fantastic value to be had with these bets.

The games that matter the most this week come in Group D where any of the four teams can still win this group, or qualify, or drop into the Europa league, or be eliminated from Europe altogether and I have one of those games in my acca this week.

I have though gone for some other games, a couple of which I feel have a very good chance of a longer odds winner coming in, which has swelled the odds on offer for the bet this week.

There’s 12 teams confirmed in the knockout stage:  Napoli, Liverpool, Club Brugge, FC Porto, Bayern Munich, Inter, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund, Paris St Germain and Benfica, so there’s just four more places to be decided this week.

Let’s take a closer look at my tips for the final set of Champions League fixtures for the Group Stages this season.

Bet Analysis: Tuesday 1st November

Liverpool v Napoli – Home Win

What kind of Liverpool will turn up in the Champions League this week and more to the point, will it matter? Napoli are absolutely flying in Serie A and have won all five of their games in the Champions League so far, including a 4-goal thrashing of Liverpool in Gameweek One that could well have been an even bigger win for the Neapolitans. Since then Liverpool have bounced back to win four games and qualify for the next phase, but while their Champions League form has been good, the Reds have struggled in the league, losing their last two games to teams that were previously in the relegation zone. Napoli were so good in that first game and Liverpool so poor in most games of late that I think this could well be a big performance and win for the visitors here.

Marseille v Tottenham – Draw

Spurs will feel aggrieved that they are not already through after a late goal from Harry Kane, which would have handed them a 2-1 win over Sporting Lisbon last week, was ruled out in somewhat controversial circumstances by VAR. That leaves Spurs now needing at least a point against Marseille at the fearsome Stade Velodrome in order to progress into the knockout phase. Marseille’s sole points so far in this competition have come against Sporting, who they beat home and away, but they have struggled against Frankfurt and Spurs and needing a win to ensure a qualification spot, I do worry they will be caught on the break. I can’t see Marseille losing at home here, but I think Spurs may do just enough to clinch the point they need to move into the next round.

Bet Analysis: Wednesday 2nd November

Shakhtar Donetsk v Red Bull Leipzig – Draw

Wednesday night kicks off with a game that will decide who will qualify from Group F alongside Real Madrid. At the moment, Red Bull Leipzig hold second spot and a three point advantage over Shakhtar Donetsk, but the Ukrainian side’s best performance came on gameweek one against tonights opponents, who they beat by a staggering 4-1 scoreline in Leipzig. Donetsk know any win will suffice here and after two hugely dramatic games with Celtic and Real Madrid, which could have been any score, but two draws has kept them alive in this group. This game will be played in Poland on a neutral ground, which gives Leipzig another advantage but I think this spirited Donetsk side will keep things close although a draw won’t ultimately be enough for them.

Maccabi Haifa v Benfica – Away Win

While Benfica and PSG have qualified from Group H there is still a battle raging for top spot in the group and while PSG have the advantage in terms of the goal difference over Benfica being four better, the French side go to Turin to face Juventus this week and Juventus need a win to ensure that they at least get the consolation of a Europa League spot. That could open the door for Benfica here against a Maccabi Haifa side who have given as good as they have got in what is a tough group. However, if Benfica can win this that puts real pressure on PSG for that top spot in the group and as such, I am going for this talented Portuguese side to land the win here.
