EPL Matchday 20 Acca – 14th & 15th January 2023

Well, last week saw a large number of upsets in the FA Cup Third Round, but despite that, only one of my four tips last week let me down, although i have to say that I got it wrong in a big way with Brighton thumping Middlesbrough.

I did expect the Seagulls to play a weakened team but what surprised me was how many Championship teams also followed suit and I do feel that makes these FA Cup games, especially in the third and fourth rounds, so tricky to predict as you are second guessing who will play, often for both teams.

Thankfully, we can be sure that managers will likely pick their strongest team this weekend as we are back with the Premier League, Matchday 20 to be exact, and it is a bumper weekend of derby games to look forward to.

We have a rare East Midlands derby between Leicester City and Nottingham Forest, plus two London derbies; Chelsea v Crystal Palace and the big North London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham which kicks off on Sunday afternoon.

Before that though we have a massive Manchester derby to look forward to from Old Trafford as Manchester United host Manchester City with revenge on their minds after successive 4-1 and 6-3 defeats against their neighbours in their last two Premier League matches.

There are some key games affecting the foot of the table too with Everton taking on Southampton and Wolves facing West Ham, while Liverpool, beaten at Brentford last week, face another tricky trip south to take on Brighton.

Let’s take a look at the games I have picked for this week’s fourfold acca.

Bet Analysis: Saturday 14th January

Manchester United v Manchester City – Home Win

The Manchester derby promises to be an exciting game and Manchester City won’t feat too much having put ten goals past United in the past two games that they have played against them. Those two sobering defeats for United will make them even more determined here to get a positive result to keep up their own good form and Champions League charge. City lost in midweek to Southampton and it is rare that they lose two in a row, but I just feel this game comes at the wrong time for them and that the home side may come away with a surprise win.

Nottingham Forest v Leicester City – Home Win

Since the end of the World Cup, Leicester City have found it hard to pick up results. There’s no doubt James Maddison’s absence has hit them hard and they now face a tricky East Midlands derby against a Forest side that have picked up wins, albeit the Carabao Cup win coming via penalties, in both their last two games. There does seem to be a bit of a crisis of confidence at Leicester at the moment and while they are playing well in spells, they are just conceding too many goals. As such, I think this Forest team, with renewed confidence after their wins in the past week, may earn a huge result here and earn a massive three points.

Brentford v Bournemouth – Home Win

For me, Brentford have been one of the most impressive teams of the season and their record against the big six teams bears comparison with any other Premier League side. They face a Bournemouth side that have hit another run of sticky form and who have slipped down the table as a result of that. The Cherries badly need a win to end their poor run but away from Brentford in a night game doesn’t appear to be their best chance of doing that. The Bees look so lively in attack and I think that they will likely run out very comfortable winners on the night in this one.

Bet Analysis: Sunday 15th January

Tottenham v Arsenal – Draw

Arsenal may be the in form team of the two, but they have not won a Premier League game away from home to Spurs since February 2015. In that time, Spurs have won the majority of the encounters between the two on home turf and that is something that they would love to continue here. It is hard to see Arsenal losing though, the Gunners have lost just once this season (away to Manchester United) and their form in recent weeks has generally been good. However, they did draw with Newcastle last time out in the EPL and Man City did claw back two points. They may have to settle for a share of the spoils here too as while I can’t see Arsenal losing, I am just not 100% sure they will get the win either.
