Euro Semifinals Accumulator – Sun 16th to Wed 19th August

We were very close to landing another accumulator win last week, only the fact that Manchester United could not score in the 90 minutes and had to wait until extra time to get their goal that won the tie with Copenhagen, meant that we didn’t land a win. Pleasingly though I did predict all four winners who made it into the semifinals, it was just a pity we could not land that extra £90 in winnings on top of that.

Due to the fact that the semifinals of the Europa League start the day after the Champions League quarterfinals are completed, this is a bit of a quick turnaround for this the final set of acca tips of the 2019-20 season. As such, I am bundling together the two Europa League semifinals together with the two Champions League semifinals to produce this last accumulator of the season.

It has certainly been an interesting week in both competitions, but in general the teams I thought would make it through have done, with the exception of Atletico Madrid who I felt were very poor and unambitious in their game with Red Bull Leipzig. At the time of writing the main part of this article, we just have the Man City v Lyon quarterfinal left to play (after which I will finish off and post up this set of tips!).

It’s been an interesting season to say the least but I want to finish the season on a positive note with this fourfold coming in as a winner! Here’s my tips for the four big European semifinal ties.

Bet Analysis: Sun 16th & Mon 17th August

Sevilla v Manchester United – Draw

A game that is good enough to have graced the final of this competition sees the most successful side in Europa League history face off against a Manchester United side that last won the competition just a couple of years ago under Jose Mourinho. Sevilla showed real grit to eke out a late win over a dogged Wolves, but there is no doubt that the Spanish side will need to up their level of performances here against a United side invigorated since Bruno Fernandes’ arrival in January. That said, I feel both sides are solid defensively and while I can see both scoring, I feel it may well take extra time and maybe even penalties to decide the winner and who progresses into the final.

Inter Milan v Shakhtar Donetsk – Inter Win

Both of these teams made relatively straightforward progress into the semifinals in their Round of 16 and quarterfinal ties and I think both teams will fancy their chances of a win here. Donetsk are on a superb run of results and are no pushovers, but it is worth remembering this is a team that has shipped six goals to Manchester City on a couple of occasions in recent times. Inter I feel are a bit more solid and have more experience and in Antonio Conte, they have a manager who knows what is required to win these big games. I expect a close game and just one goal in it, but I am backing the Italian side to make it into the final on Friday.

Bet Analysis: Tue 18th & Wed 19th August

Paris St Germain v Red Bull Leipzig – Paris St Germain Win

Two teams who had the same result but very different performances to get them into the semifinals. I felt Paris St Germain were rather fortunate against Atalanta to gain a win due to two late goals, and there was no doubt that the introduction of Kylian Mbappe from the bench turned that game in their favour. In contrast, Red Bull were excellent in defeating a lacklustre Atletico Madrid side 2-1 in their quarterfinals and they showed they can cope without Timo Werner very nicely. Both sides in this semifinal do have excellent defensive set ups and this is likely to be the semifinal with the fewest goals and incidents and while it will be close, I just feel the extra experience Paris St Germain have and especially the extra quality in attack, will be the difference maker in this game.

Bayern Munich v Lyon – Bayern Munich Win

There is nothing more to say about Bayern Munich’s stunning win over Barcelona in the quarterfinals, the first time since 1945 that the Spanish side have conceded eight goals in a game. Bayern were absolutely rampant and exposed all the flaws in this Barcelona team with clinical efficiency. They scored eight and it could well have been double figures. Similarly, Lyon’s clinical finishing saw them get the better of Manchester City, winning 3-1 on Saturday night to clinch a semi spot against a team they faced in the semis back in the 2009/10 season. Bayern won that tie 4-0 on aggregate and while I can’t see the German side having it quite so easy this time around, I do feel that they will end up as comfortable winners on the night and deservedly earn a spot in the final.
