Europa League Acca: Thu 29th October
I think it is fair to say that we were a little unfortunate in the accumulators last week. On both nights we landed three out of four in the games and the ones we missed out on, didn’t land very wide of the mark at all. In this competition, I think I underestimated Rangers qualities, or overestimated Standard Liege’s when going for the draw, but in reading the match report, it does appear that Liege should have been level before Roofe’s goal from the half-way line.
Such is the nature of accumulator betting though and part of its appeal is this kind of volatility. You can never tell when a referee’s decision, a controversial sending off, of a goal rightly or wrongly disallowed or even a mistake by a usually reliable player can throw even the best planned acca bet into disarray.
Still, I am confident that this week we stand a great chance of landing that elusive winning bet as I have put together another fourfold this week from the Europa League to add to the one I did on Tuesday for both nights of Champions League action. Due to the odds on some of the game involving the English teams, notably Spurs and Arsenal, I am not really going to focus on them this week, but instead may look for better value in some of the other games.
There are some crackers to look forward too as well including AEK Athens v Leicester, AC Milan taking on Sparta Prague, Celtic’s trip to northern France to take on Lille and perhaps the biggest game of the evening, Real Sociedad taking on Italian side Napoli, who were surprisingly beaten at home by AZ67 Alkmaar in their opening fixture last week.
There’s lots to look forward to so let’s take a closer look at the games I’ve tipped this Thursday night.
Having lost to Braga last week 3-0, AEK Athens will know another defeat here will severely hamper their hopes of any progress in this tournament. Leicester also started brightly, winning their game with Zorya Luhansk 3-0 to make a solid start in the group. AEK have started ok in the Greek league with seven points from their opening four games, Leicester too have started brightly in the Premier League, but in truth I don’t think that league form will matter too much here as I think Leicester have a much better quality team and that should be enough for them to claim another win here.
Gent v Hoffenheim – Away Win
Despite having qualified for the Europa League last season, Gent’s performances this season in the Belgian top league, the Jupiler, have been somewhat disappointing with three wins from their first nine games and six defeats. Having lost on the road to a somewhat limited Slovan Liberec team last week, and following a game on Monday in the Belgian league, they won’t have a huge amount of time to prepare for the visit of Hoffenheim. The German side, who beat Bayern Munich 4-1 in the league at the start of the campaign, lie 8th in the table having picked up six points from their first four games and while I feel the visitors are the better side by a distance, I think on the road they are not quite so formidable. Even so I think they will just edge what should be a close game.
Real Sociedad v Napoli – Draw
In terms of the quality of both the teams, I think this is the best game of the night. Real Sociedad have started the season well in Spain and after six games were top of the La Liga table heading into the weekend. Napoli had also started well to lie third in Serie A but the Neapolitans were beaten 1-0 at home by AZ67 last week, a result which now means that they really need to get at least something from the game. One chink of light for the Italians is that Sociedad’s one loss in the league this season has been at home to Valencia but I think this is a very tough game for the Italians and while I think they will do enough to avoid defeat, I think the two teams will pick up a point here.
Slavia Prague v Bayer Leverkusen – Away Win
Slavia Prague have had no real concerns domestically having picked up 16 points from the first 18 available but their form in Europe is much poorer having lost four of their last five games in European competition. In contrast Bayer Leverkusen have won their last two games in all competitions and have made an unbeaten start in the Bundesliga, winning one and drawing three of their opening games. That propensity to draw matches did make me consider that option here, but I think having made a positive start last week at home to nice with a thumping 6-2 win, Leverkusen will want to follow that up with three more points here.
