Europa League Accumulator – 22nd October 2020

After the Champions League games have concluded on Wednesday night, we now turn our attention to the Europa League, which now is back in its customary Thursday night spot. There are a number of top teams competing in this competition this season including the likes of Tottenham, Arsenal, Leicester, Benfica, AS Roma, Villarreal, AC Milan, Celtic, Rangers, PSV Eindhoven and many more.

Add to those eight more teams from the third placed teams in each group from the Champions League in the knockout stages after Christmas, and it is easy to see why this competition is starting to grow in stature for teams.

One thing to note here is that in these early Group Stage games, some of the bigger teams may well rest key players for games. Where I think that is likely, such as in the games with Arsenal and Tottenham this week, I have tried to factor this in to any of the predictions that I make.

Over the last couple of years, the Europa League has been the kinder of the two European competitions in terms of landing me winners and while of course I hope that I can pick up more winnings from the Champions League, I’d still like to enjoy a good deal of success in this competition too.

Starting with this fourfold bet that I have put together across the early and late kick off matches this Thursday.

Bet Analysis: Thursday 22nd October

Rapid Vienna v Arsenal – Away Win

I do think that Mikel Arteta will err on the side of caution here and rather than rest all his first team players, I think he will still pick a strong team, but I do feel that the biggest names will be rested after a very busy international break and period of games before that. Rapid are not the strongest team in Austria and I don’t think that they have the quality of players in their squad that are going to cause even a below-strength Arsenal too many problems. My one worry for Arsenal is defensively and they are prone to conceding some soft goals at times. However, going forward, even if they do play a second-string team, they should have more than enough quality in the squad to claim the win here to get their Europa League campaign off to a positive start,

Standard Liege v Rangers – Draw

I have been impressed with how Steven Gerrard has been building his Rangers side up and after a solid display in Europe last season, when I think it is fair to say they exceeded expectations, I think they are set to make another good fist of the Europa League again this season. Once again, they have been drawn into a tough group with Lech Poznan and Benfica the other two teams in Group D, but I think they have the quality to pick up crucial points on the road to strengthen their chances of progress. I can see them doing that here against a Standard Liege side that are pretty ordinary in terms of the quality of players that they have available. A draw would, I think, be a good point earned for the Scottish side.

Celtic v AC Milan – Away Win

Celtic have met AC Milan ten times previously and managed just one win over the Italian giants in that time, and that came thanks to a last minute winner at Celtic Park. Milan are the class act here and have started their Serie A campaign well ahead of their derby clash with Inter Milan last weekend. They may not be at the same level of the great Milan sides of the past, but they have been improving steadily over the past few years and now have a squad that should not only go well in Europe, but should be a real challenger for the Champions League spots in Serie A too. With Zlatan Ibrahimovic possibly leading the line for them, I think they will be too strong for Neil Lennon’s men here and will hand the Celts an opening night defeat.

Sparta Prague v Lille – Away Win

This game is the other one in the Milan/Celtic group and I think both these teams will be in with a shot of qualifying for the next phase in what is one of the tougher groups this season. Sparta Prague have produced some excellent results in Europe over the past few seasons, especially at home, but I have been very impressed with how well Lille have started the season in Ligue 1 and I think that they are going to be a surprise package in this tournament this season. They are a team that does go in cycles somewhat and I think they are very much on the up and as such, I am backing them to land the win here.
