Europa League Accumulator – 25th November

Given that things have become clearer in the Champions League after the matchday 5 games last night and the night before, we are now going to see a similar outcome for the Europa League matchday 5 games, which take place tonight.

All four of the British teams remaining in the tournament have key games. West Ham need just a point from their trip to Austria to take on Rapid Vienna to ensure that they progress to the next round,  but Leicester City, Rangers and Celtic all need to pick up wins to give themselves any chance of following the Hammers.

There’s also some key games in other groups too with the game between AS Monaco and Real Sociedad likely to be a key one in that group,  while the Galatasaray v Marseille and Lokomotiv Moscow v Lazio games will also have a key role to play in what happens in that group too.

For some other teams, it will just be a case of them earning the win, or having the result in the other game going their way, to ensure that they progress, but with things being very tight in a number of groups, it may well be the case that many teams have a huge amount to play for when we reach Matchday 6 in a couple of weeks.

For me, the best teams in the tournament this year have looked to be Lyon, West Ham, Sociedad, Monaco and Eintracht Frankfurt, however with a host of teams dropping into the competition after Christmas, it is hard to make a convincing case for any of these teams to win the tournament.

Anyway, here’s my tips for four key games taking place tonight.

Bet Analysis: Thursday 25th November

Bayer Leverkusen v Celtic – Home Win

When these teams met on Matchday 2, Celtic were given a lesson and thrashed 4-0 at home by the German side, so it is not really surprising that I have gone with the home win here too. Leverkusen’s recent form has been a little bit up and down domestically, but they have gone three unbeaten and will be confident of getting the better of Celtic who have also been on a good run of form themselves, unbeaten in their last five. However, the Celts do struggle against the higher quality opponents they face in Europe, especially on the road and after such a thumping at home, I don’t think the Scottish side will get any joy at the Bay Arena on Thursday.

Rapid Vienna v West Ham United – Away Win

West Ham just need one point from their final two games in order to clinch qualification from this group, and a win would also see them confirmed as the group winners and that is what I expect them to achieve here. Rapid Vienna have been the poorest team in this group and after a defeat to Wolves on Saturday, West Ham will want to bounce back with a win and I can see them achieving that in a game to be played behind closed doors due to the new lockdown in place in Austria, which I think is a negative for the home side.

AS Monaco v Real Sociedad – Draw

Both these teams know that a win in this game will qualify them for the next phase of the tournament, but similarly, a defeat could see them miss out with PSV Eindhoven poised behind them to take up at least second place in the group with a win over Sturm Graz. So there is plenty to play for in this game between two teams that are yet to taste defeat but who have drawn plenty of games in what has been a tight group.  The teams drew 1-1 when they met in Spain, with the Spanish side dominating possession but requiring a second half equaliser to gain a point. I can see a similar game here with Sociedad countering Monaco and the two teams battling out another hard fought draw, which may ultimately be a good point for both in the final reckoning.

Rangers v Sparta Prague – Home Win

With Lyon already confirmed as the group winners and qualified for the next phase, only second spot in. Group A is up for grabs and the winner of this game between these two teams is likely to clinch that. Sparta beat Rangers 1-0 in the first game and if they can land a win or draw here, then they will be the hot favourites to go through. A win for Rangers though, especially by a scoreline better than 1-0, would give them a very real chance of progress, even though they have to travel to Lyon in their final game. With a packed Ibrox behind them I expect the home side to take the game to the Czech’s and come away with a key win.
