Europa League Accumulator – Thursday 20th September

It may be European Football’s second-most prestigious competition, but over the last couple of seasons, the Europa League has been very kind to us when it comes to landing us some very pleasing accumulator wins. This week, the group stage of the tournament finally gets underway with 12 groups (A through to L) featuring some high quality teams battling it out to qualify for the Round of 32 in the New Year.

Over the coming months there will be six matchdays, each taking place on a Thursday with some games kicking off at 17.55 UK Time and then the later selection of games getting underway at 20.00 UK Time.

Arsenal and Chelsea are already in this competition this year and they are joined by the likes of Dynamo Kiev, Besiktas, Sevilla, Rangers, Celtic, Marseille, Lazio, AC Milan, Zenit St Petersburg, Olympiakos, Sporting Lisbon, Bayer Leverkusen and Anderlecht, many of whom are more used to playing Champions League football at this time of the year.

With 24 games to pick from on Thursday night, I am confident we can land another solid couple of acca wins from this competition and here’s the tips I am backing for this coming Thursday’s games.

Bet Analysis: Thursday 20th September

PAOK Saloniki v Chelsea – Away Win

PAOK were defeated by Benfica in the final round of Champions League qualifying to earn a place in the Europa League and they open the tournament with a lucrative and difficult home tie against an in form Chelsea team who smashed four past Cardiff at the weekend. Eden Hazard grabbed a treble in that game, but I can see Maurizio Sarri resting key players for this game, although Hazard may start as he sat out a couple of Chelsea’s openers. Even without a couple of key men, Chelsea should still be more than strong enough to get a win against a team who were thumped 4-1 at home by a modest Benfica side.

Villarreal v Rangers – Home Win

Both these teams landed much-needed wins at the weekend domestically but for me it is the Spanish team that are the class act here. Steven Gerrard has done a decent job at Rangers since coming in but there is no doubt that they are a class below a team like Villarreal, who boast some top quality players, despite having a poor start to the campaign in La Liga. El Madrigal is a tough ground to go to get a result and Rangers will find it very difficult there against an accomplished and technically sound team and as such, I think this is a Villarreal win all day long.

Celtic v Rosenborg – Away Win

I have to admit to being singularly unimpressed with Celtic this season. After a second treble last season, the boards inability to back Brendan Rodgers with new signings to push his team on to new levels, allowing them to compete in Europe, has backfired. The Celts were eliminated by AEK Athens from the Champions League and now face Rosenborg, an equally tough opponent, in the Europa League. The Norwegians have won all of their last five games and they are by no means a pushover and given how Celtic have blown hot and cold this season, I think this Rosenborg team could pull off a real shock at Parkhead.

FC Copenhagen v Zenit St Petersburg

Both of these teams have recent Champions League experience and both will feel that this competition is a bit of a come-down for them compared to their usual European exploits. Even so, it is a very tough game for the home side even against a Zenit side that has lost its manager Roberto Mancini, who has taken on the role as new Italy manager. Copenhagen are a decent team but they lack the quality of Zenit who have a habit of playing very well in the group stages of the Europa League and I think that it will be the visitors celebrating a win here.
