Europa League Thursday Acca Tip – Thursday 16th March

The Europa League Round of 16 second leg ties are back this week with just seven days between the two legs, you can expect fireworks aplenty as the two teams get to grips with each other.

The first leg of the games last week proved to be a real mixed bag. We saw Manchester United land the biggest win with a 4-1 win over Real Betis, while Sevilla, Bayer Leverkusen and AS Roma all earned 2-0 wins over Fenerbahce, Ferencvaros and Real Sociedad respectively.

Juventus were the only other side to gain an advantage with a 1-0 win over SC Freiburg in Turin, while three of the eight games finished all square, with Shakhtar Donetsk v Feyenoord, Sporting v Arsenal and Union Berlin v Union Saint-Gilloise finishing as 1-1, 2-2 and 3-3 draws respectively.

That means that most teams left in the tournament have plenty to play for this week as they seek a spot in the quarterfinals, which take place in April.

I’ve had a few near misses with my acca tips of late, and I’d like to get one over the line and over the years, the Europa League has been pretty good to me, both with my single bets and also with accas, so lets hope this set of tips for Thursday Night’s games can land us that win.

Bet Analysis: Thursday 15th March

Real Betis (1) v (4) Manchester United – Away Win

A superb first leg performance from Manchester United has put them in a very commanding position against a Betis side that folded somewhat in that first leg at Old Trafford, especially in the second half. United could, and perhaps should, have won by a greater margin in that first leg and the Red Devils won’t have any concerns with the road trip to Spain having won three and drawn one of their four away games in this competition so far this season, two of those coming against Spanish opponents in Sociedad and Barcelona. I’d like to think Betis will give this a go, but if they do I see United countering on them and that I think will be a huge problem for the home side. I can see United securing another win here to move smoothly into the quarterfinals.

SC Freiburg (0) v (1) Juventus – Home Win

This is my big risk selection in this accumulator as most people would have Juventus down for the win here, or at least a draw to ensure that they progress. However, Juventus form has not been as solid as it has been in previous seasons and SC Freiburg have a solid home record, and they proved to be stern opposition to Juventus in that first leg in Turin. Juventus struggled against Nantes in the first leg in the previous round, before winning on the road, but Freiburg played the French side in the league phase and beat them comfortably both times. With partisan support behind them and a chance to take out one of the big boys from this competition, I am backing Freiburg to win on the night, although this tie could go to extra time or even penalties to decide who goes through.

Arsenal (2) v (2) Sporting Lisbon – Home Win

After an entertaining first leg in Lisbon, Arsenal head into this second leg all square but with home advantage against the Portuguese side who have never scored a goal against Arsenal in an away leg tie. The Gunners also performed well in their last game at the weekend with a comfortable win away to Fulham, so they come into this game in good form and with talisman striker Gabriel Jesus back in contention for a start. Lisbon won’t make this easy though and I think the visitors will score a goal but I think the extra quality Arsenal have will be enough for them to secure the win and to progress into the next round.

Ferencvaros (0) v (2) Bayer Leverkusen – Away Win

My final selection here is Bayer Leverkusen to win in Hungary against a Ferencvaros side who I feel are one of the weaker teams left in this competition. Leverkusen defeated AS Monaco in France in the second leg in the last round and then won the tie on penalties and if they can do that to a decent Ligue One team, then I feel they should be able to pick up the away win here. The German side have plenty of quality players, including on loan Chelsea star Callum Hudson-Odoi and on paper at least they look the much stronger outfit. Ferencvaros have done well to get this far in the tournament but I think that this will be as far as they go with Leverkusen making comfortable progress into the quarterfinals on the back of another win here.
