Midweek Acca Tip – 1st, 2nd & 3rd May

We were close once again last week with our midweek acca as just Bayern Munich let us down and the other results all came in. In truth, having watched the Bayern Munich tie, the German side had more than enough chances to win the game, but fell to two sucker-punch goals that ensured Real will start the second leg this week with a big advantage.

I was pleased to see my other tips also went much as I expected, although I didn’t expect Liverpool to run in quite so many goals against AS Roma at Anfield. Those two late Roma goals do keep the tie alive, but I can see Liverpool scoring at least once in Rome, if not more if Roma defend like that and I think that makes the task too difficult for the Italians.

In the Europa League I called the Arsenal game almost on the money. I always had the feeling Arsenal’s back line would have one moment of madness and Griezmann would punish them and so it proved. It must be so disappointing for the Gunners considering they played a team with 10 men for 80 minutes and with their manager stood high in the stands after being sent off.

Marseille as I suggested, took a decent lead with them into the second leg in Austria and a two-goal lead is a strong one, especially as I see Marseille having the capacity to hit the Austrians on the break. The first goal in this game on Thursday will be crucial, whoever gets it will likely decide how the second leg progresses.

Anyway, after my second near miss in a row, here’s hoping that the football gods are kind to me this week with this selection of tips for my midweek acca. First leg results are shown in brackets.

Bet Analysis: Tuesday 1st May

Real Madrid (2) v (1) Bayern Munich – Home Win – Real Madrid will want to guard against a performance at home like they put in against Juventus, where only a late penalty put them through after a 1-3 defeat to the Italians. Bayern wasted a hatful of chances in the first game and they will come to rue that as although Real didn’t play particularly well, I think they showed real professionalism and team spirit to battle and grab the win. Bayern can win here, I have no doubt about that and if Real start like they did against Juventus, they could be in trouble, but I doubt Zidane’s side will make the same mistake twice and I’m backing them for the win here.

Bet Analysis: Wednesday 2nd May

AS Roma (2) v (5) Liverpool – Draw – For Roma they know what they have to do, and that is essentially repeat the result they achieved against Barcelona in the last round. However, they have to do that against a Liverpool side that for 80 minutes, had torn Roma apart at Anfield. The Reds also had a similar lead to defend against Manchester City and had a few scary moments, so I am expecting drama in Rome on Wednesday, but I think Liverpool’s attack has the ability to score in Rome, perhaps more than one goal. If that is the case, Roma’s chances of going through drop sharply. I have this down as a 2-2 draw, but in truth it could be 1-1 or even 3-3. The first goal here will be crucial, if Liverpool get it then I think Roma could well go into their shell but I still think a draw is the most likely result.

Bet Analysis: Thursday 26th April

Atletico Madrid (1) v (1) Arsenal – Home Win – The Wanda Metropolitano will be at fever pitch for the return leg of this game. Arsenal gifted 10-man Atletico a late equaliser at the Emirates turning a game that they should have won at least 2-0, if not 3-0, into a 1-1 draw and that now swings the tie massively in favour of the Spaniards. Arsenal should not be without hope though, Chelsea beat Atletico in the Champions League in Spain earlier this season and Madrid’s form at the moment isn’t the best. However with Atletico’s defence so miserly, especially at home, the Gunners have their work cut out to find the net even once and given Arsenal’s away record against decent sides, I feel this is a step to far and that Madrid will win the game.

Red Bull Salzburg (0) v (2) Marseille – Home Win – The fact that Marseille kept a clean sheet at home, while scoring twice, is a key factor for me in this game. Salzburg have scored just one goal in three games against Marseille this season and it is hard to see them finding the net three times at home, without reply to go through. Marseille look strong defensively and even if they ship one goal, I fancy their attacking players to cause enough damage against Salzburg, particularly late in the game, to grab at least one goal. Salzburg have beaten some top sides at home this season and I think they’ll commit to attack and probably win the game, but I think the lack of an away goal from the first leg may be their ultimate undoing here.
