Midweek Acca Tips: 22nd & 23rd October 2019

Following this weeks games in the Champions League on Tuesday and Wednesday night, we will be at the midway stage of the group phase and we should have a better idea of which teams are likely to make it into the knockout phase of the tournament in the new year.

For some teams, such as Tottenham, it is now very much a case of win or bust, but for others, like Manchester City, it is about consolidating their excellent start, qualifying as soon as possible and then being able to rest players perhaps for the last group game, or even the last two group games if a team qualifies early.

We’ve had something of a mixed bag with returns on Champions League action over the years, some weeks we have had superb returns and others, we have done poorly and I would like to get more consistency in this competition and I believe this selection of tips for the games on Tuesday and Wednesday night comes together in a very good value and plausible acca bet.

Here’s my tips for this week’s Champions League action.

Bet Analysis: Tuesday 22nd October

Shakhtar Donetsk v Dinamo Zagreb – Home Win

This may not be the most glamorous of fixtures on Tuesday night in the Champions League, but I’ve picked it because it offers the best odds in what is a seriously lop-sided selection of games with many of the top teams in Europe facing what looks, on paper at least, a relatively comfortable evening against a lesser light. Zagreb currently are equal on points with Donetsk following their win over Atalanta and they only lost 2-0 away to Manchester City, although in truth they could have lost by a lot more had City been more clinical in front of goal. Donetsk were thumped 3-0 by City at home but I feel they have a tad more experience in their team than Zagreb and in this crucial couplet of home and away matches in the middle of the group stage, that experience could well prove to be vital against a Zagreb side not used to this level of competition.

Galatasaray v Real Madrid – Away Win

Real Madrid may be top of La Liga, but their performances this season have hardly endeared themselves to their fans and in Europe, they have picked up just one point from two games having been well beaten in Paris by Paris St Germain and then held at home by Club Bruges 2-2, after being 2-0 down. There’s little room for manoeuvre now for Zidane’s men as they face a difficult trip to Istanbul to take on a Galatasaray side that used to be one of the most feared destinations in Europe for top teams. That has waned a little in recent times as the Turkish sides results have been poor, so much so that I feel even a Real Madrid side lacking form and confidence should be good enough to get a crucial win on the road.

Bet Analysis: Wednesday 23rd October

Ajax v Chelsea – Home Win

Ajax sit comfortably at the top of Group H after two convincing 3-0 wins in their games at home to Lille and away to Valencia and they now take on a Chelsea side who are unbeaten in their last nine away games in European competitions. Frank Lampard’s side earned a fine win in France against Lille last time out in this competition to put themselves back in contention in this group but I feel that Ajax is a very tough team to beat at their Amsterdam Arena and it took an incredible series of events for Spurs to achieve that last season. This Chelsea team is a lot less experienced than that Spurs team was, in many ways like Ajax, but while they have picked up some good results on the road this season, I think it is a lot to ask them to land a result here. Ajax should win this one narrowly.

Red Bull Salzburg v Napoli – Home Win

I have been hugely impressed by Salzburg’s attacking mentality in this competition so far this season. They thrashed Genk on the first day of fixtures and then gave Liverpool a real fright at Anfield, coming back from 3-0 down to level it at 3-3 before Mo Salah handed Liverpool a 4-3 win. Napoli away from home are nowhere near as dangerous as at home and their main hope tends to be to keep teams from scoring. Salzburg however tend to score freely and as they showed against Liverpool, they have the players to unlock any defence. I really feel they could cause a big upset here and land a win against the Italians which could well throw this group wide open.
