Midweek CL Acca Tips – 3rd & 4th November 2020
I don’t think I have ever seen a season quite like this one, indeed I don’t think any of us have. The Champions League games just keep on coming thick and fast and it is incredible to think that barely a couple of weeks ago, the Group Stage had not even started, but after these games on Tuesday and Wednesday next week, we will be at the midway stage.
As such, I don’t think it is unsurprising that we are seeing a number of top teams seeing their players go down with injuries because of you add that rigorous schedule to the busier than usual international games, plus a busy domestic fixture list, it is easy to see why we have seen so many injuries this season.
As such, I think the top teams will realise that getting their qualification from the group stage sorted as quickly as possible will be a huge boost allowing them to possibly rest key men for at least one and possibly even two midweek fixtures in this competition in the weeks ahead and I expect many teams to focus picking up six points over the next two games a real aim.
We have some big games to enjoy this week, Man Utd aim to keep their fine record in the Champions League going away to Istanbul Basaksehir, Liverpool put their 100% record on the line away to a tricky Atalanta side, while Chelsea face Rennes and Manchester City have what looks like a simple task at home to Greek side Olympiakos.
The biggest game of the week however is Real Madrid against Inter Milan on Tuesday and that game along with a selection of the above forms the basis for our tips for this week.
The top two sides in. Group D meet knowing that things are still very much up for grabs in this group. A win for Liverpool here would put them in a very strong position in the group but I do fear for the Reds due to their injury hit defence and the fact that even when they had fully fit centre halves, they have been giving teams chances. Atalanta started slowly in this competition last season, losing all their first three games, but still qualified for the knockout phase and although they were poor at home to Ajax, I can see them springing a shock here against a team that tends not to travel well to Italy, even with a full-strength team out.
Real Madrid v Inter Milan – Home Win
This is the first meeting between these two giants of European football since 1998 and it is fair to say that the history of this fixture suggests the home team tends to come out on top. In seven home games for Real, they have won six of those, losing just the one. For Inter’s seven home games, they have won five with two games drawn. As such, the history points to a win for Real Madrid and in truth, their position in the group, bottom of the table after two games, does seem to make this a must-win game for Zidane’s men. Inter’s form in this competition isn’t great with two draws in their opening two games but they’d take a similar result here, however I think given their predicament, Real will know this is a game they must win and I think they will do precisely that.
Bet Analysis: Wednesday 4th November
Chelsea v Rennes – Home Win
These two teams have never met previously but they do have history in the transfer market for goalkeepers, with Chelsea purchasing both Peter Cech and their current first choice Edouard Mendy from the French club. A solid win last week in Krasnodar has put Chelsea top of Group E while REnnes have just a single point from their draw with the Russian side. If Chelsea can play anywhere near as well as they did in Russia, then they should win this game very comfortably.
Red Bull Leipzig v Paris St Germain – Away Win
Both these sides have three points and know with Manchester United leading the group, that these two games between them on Matchdays 3 and 4 will go a long way towards deciding who qualifies from this group. Assuming United pick up at least four points from their games with Basaksehir, a win here would be a massive boost for either side. For me, Paris St Germain look the most likely to get that. That lacklustre performance against Manchester United apart, their form of late has been much improved since the start of the season and while Leipzig have started well in Germany, that 5-0 thrashing to United will have stung them. PSG beat Red Bull 3-0 in the Champions League semifinal last year and while it won’t be that easy, I think they will do enough, even without Neymar, to claim a vital win here.
