Midweek EPL Accumulator – 15th to 17th December

I think we can call last weekend something of a freak one in the Premier League as it was one of those very rare occasions when none of the ‘Big Six’ teams managed to land a victory. Chelsea and Arsenal were beaten (by Everton and Burnley respectively) while Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United all only picked up draws (the latter two in the most boring Manchester derby I have ever had the misfortune to witness).

As such, I am willing to bet that not too many accumulator bets were landed last weekend but as the old adage goes “form is temporary, class is permanent” and I would not expect to see another weekend like that for a long time to come.

There’s not a lot of time for the teams to dwell on the results of the weekend as we now have a somewhat rare midweek Premier League matchday to enjoy from Tuesday through to Thursday night this week. All 20 teams will be in action with the biggest game coming at Anfield as second place Liverpool take on table-topping Tottenham with the Reds needing a win to move above Spurs, and Spurs needing a draw or better to maintain their place at the top of the table, thanks to their better goal difference between the two teams. This is a tough game to call though given the form of both teams and the injury situation at Liverpool, so I have focused my attention elsewhere for this quarter of selections.

Other big games include Leicester facing Everton at the King Power Stadium, Arsenal desperately needing a win at home to an in-form Southampton side, Leeds take on Newcastle at Elland Road, while there’s another London derby to enjoy as West Ham face Crystal Palace. The action starts on Tuesday night though with an intriguing clash at Molineux as Wolves take on Chelsea in what is now a crucial game for both teams.

As per usual, I have gone through the games coming up this week to bring you my acca tip for this set of games and I am hoping that after a couple of unusual sets of results, things may start to settle down a little and be a little more predictable!

Bet Analysis: Tuesday 15th December

Wolves v Chelsea – Draw

After losing at Everton, this is another difficult away day for Chelsea and in truth, they can’t really afford to lose here too as that could see them drop off the pace being set at the top of the table. Wolves have suffered a big loss in the shape of Raul Jiminez’s awful head injury and it was notable that they did look a much less formidable attacking outfit in their 1-0 loss at home to Aston Villa at the weekend. Wolves though don’t lose too many games in a row and with that being their second defeat in successive games, I think they will be itching to put that right here. I can’t see the home side having enough firepower to land the win here, but by the same token, I think Chelsea won’t quite do enough either and I think a draw, either by a 1-1 or 0-0 scoreline, does look the best option.

Bet Analysis:Wednesday 16th December

Arsenal v Southampton – Home Win

It is not a great time to be an Arsenal fan, another home loss to Burnley leaves the Gunners in 15th place in the table and the pressure is being heaped on Mikel Arteta here. In contrast, Southampton’s 3-0 win over bottom side Sheffield United moved them into fourth in the table at the weekend ahead of Chelsea and with just one defeat in their last ten Premier League games, they are going to be a formidable opponent here. The Gunners though badly need a win and they have more than enough quality to get it here and I just have a feeling that this will be the game where the tide starts to turn for them. This is more a gut feeling than based on the stats, but I do think Arsenal will take a narrow win here.

Leicester City v Everton- Home Win

Both these sides picked up great wins at the weekend, but I think at home, Leicester are looking pretty strong at the moment. Everton did beat Chelsea at Goodison Park though, so they are in good form heading into this game, but the way Leicester put together a fine first half display against Brighton does make me feel that the Foxes are the real deal in this open Premier League season and I am backing them to land the win here too.

Bet Analysis:Thursday 17th December

Sheffield United v Manchester United – Away Win

Sheffield United are in danger of being cut adrift at the bottom of the Premier League and they face the team that have the best away record in the Premier League this season. Even though Manchester United are under pressure to pick up wins, I think this is a game which should be a formality for them and I am backing them to get another three points on the road here.
