New Year EPL Acca – 1st & 2nd January 2022

Happy New Year!

No luck with our tips last time out, but at least three of the games that I tipped took place, so I am getting better at which ones will be hit by Covid-19 related issues!

A bit like me really, as I am writing this having tested positive myself over Christmas! So it’s not just the Premier League’s great and good that are being affected.

Like last week, I have tried to avoid those teams that have been hit hardest by Covid over the last few days, so I am not doing Newcastle this week (even though I was hugely impressed by their performance against Manchester United) and that’s a pain as they are good odds to beat Southampton, but I feel that game will be called off.

We do have another game that could be called off with Chelsea having been hit hard by injuries and Covid-related issues, but their game with Liverpool is so huge after those teams dropped points in midweek allowing Manchester City to open up an eight point gap at the top of the table, that I have risked this one going ahead.

Man City face Arsenal as the two teams with the best records over their last five games clash at the Emirates Stadium. A win for City would put them 11 points clear of Chelsea, 12 of Liverpool with at least one of these teams, if not both, dropping points again this weekend. That could signal the end of the Premier League race as a contest in my view.

Anyway, let’s hope that 2022 promises us a bit more happiness and a bit more luck with my acca bets, although seeing as I’ve started this season well, I can’t be too greedy!

Here’s our first acca of 2022!

Bet Analysis: Saturday 1st January

Watford v Tottenham – Away Win

Spurs remained unbeaten but were held by Southampton, despite playing a large percentage of the game against ten men earlier this week but they face another away trip which offers more hope of victory here. Watford were hammered 4-1 at home by West Ham in the week and that performance leaves the Hornets in real trouble at the wrong end of the table and was the latest of a number of heavy home defeats that they have suffered in recent times. If Spurs can find the same energy they showed in their draw with Liverpool, rather than the unimaginative display at Southampton, then they should win this one relatively easily.

Crystal Palace v West Ham United – Away Win

Crystal Palace got back to winning ways in midweek, as did West Ham and this promises to be an interesting London derby at Selhurst Park. Patrick Vieira’s team has lost just one of their last four games and they have become a much more difficult team to beat under him. However, West Ham have had a very good year under David Moyes and after winning at the weekend, they know another victory here could put them back in the hunt for fourth spot, especially with Arsenal facing Manchester City this weekend too. This should be a good game on Saturday night between two sides who are developing nicely but I feel the Hammers will just get the win.

Bet Analysis: Sunday 2nd January

Everton v Brighton – Draw

I was so impressed with how Brighton played away to Chelsea in the week that I think they have an excellent chance of getting something against Everton. Their biggest problem is scoring goals, they created so many chances against Chelsea but could not finish them off and it was that which prevented them winning. Everton are not an easy team to face at Goodison Park and the Toffees badly need a win, but I don’t think they’ll get that here as I am taking Brighton to end up with a share of the spoils on the long trip home.

Chelsea v Liverpool – Home Win

Aside from Thomas Tuchel’s constant moaning about how hard Chelsea have got it at the moment with injuries and illness (it is so bad, that their bench against Brighton in midweek was – Kepa (£72 million), Alonso (£24 million), Kante (£32m), Chalobah (Academy), Niguez (£4m loan with £30m option to buy), Barkley (£15m), Ziyech (£39m), Havertz (£70m) and Sarr (Free), I’ve been pretty impressed with the German so far. They have lost key defenders for this game though which is a worry, but Liverpool looked so devoid of ideas at Leicester once they had missed chances, that I fear the Reds could be set for another December/January slump, especially with Keita, Mane and Salah away for a month at the AFCON. This will be close, tight, nervy and fractious but I feel Chelsea just sneak the win.
