Premier League Acca: 12th & 13th December

Weird results are a killer aren’t they? Were you someone who backed Barcelona to lose 3-0 at home to Juventus? There were good odds on that and that result saw Barcelona, not only succumb to a humiliating defeat on home soil, but also lose out on top spot in the group (and now potentially face a much tougher draw in the Round of 16 next year).

We had a fair few of those odd results on Tuesday night in the Champions League which pretty much meant my acca bet for the CL was a non-starter. Still, I have the Europa League still to go on Thursday and of course, coming up this weekend we have Matchday 12 in the Premier League, which features a number of cracking matches.

The big game this weekend comes at Old Trafford as Manchester United, now dumped out of the Champions League due to their 3-2 defeat at Red Bull Leipzig, face their close rivals Manchester City in a game that has seen the away team get the better of things for the most part over the last four or five years. With both chasing the top four (and with a game in hand on those above them) it should be a cracking game between the two at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.

The EPL action begins on Friday night with Leeds facing West Ham at Elland Road before we have the remaining nine games across Saturday and Sunday. There are no Monday games due to Matchday 13 of the Premier League taking place from Tuesday to Thursday night next week (in a set of games that sees the top two Tottenham and Liverpool clash at Anfield).

Before that we’ve got another couple of derby games at the weekend as Wolves face Aston Villa and Crystal Palace host Spurs. We also see Chelsea venture north to take on Everton at Goodison Park, while Liverpool travel to London to take on Fulham.

Let’s take a closer look at the games we have picked for our weekend fourfold accumulator bet in the hope of landing that pre-Christmas windfall at the bookies expense!

Bet Analysis: Saturday 12th December

Newcastle United v West Brom – Home Win

West Brom come into this game having been on the wrong end of a 5-1 mauling by Crystal Palace last weekend and they face a Newcastle side that while not the most consistent, still sit in a relatively comfortable 13th position in the table. Steve Bruce’s men do blow hot and cold, but I fancy them to get the job done here against a West Brom side whose only victory this season has come over fellow promoted side Fulham. Defensively, the Baggies look all at sea and while Newcastle don’t score too many even one goal may be enough to claim the win in this one.

Manchester United v Manchester City – Away Win

After being knocked out of the Champions League in midweek, Manchester United will be desperate for a response at home to a Manchester City side who could afford to rest players in their midweek Champions League game having already qualified for the next phase. A defeat here for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will really heap the pressure on him but unfortunately, that is the result I am leaning towards. In recent years, the away teams have tended to do better in these fixtures and I think Manchester City’s quality is such that if United try to counter attack them and surrender possession, City will make them pay. Expect a close battle but I think City will edge it.

Bet Analysis: Sunday 13th December

Crystal Palace v Tottenham – Away Win

It has been notable this season how Spurs have become a ‘Jose Mourinho’ type side defensively, while still looking a very dangerous attacking side. Defensively they look so much more difficult to break down now and that has stood them in good stead in recent weeks in particular when they held Chelsea 0-0 and hung on to beat Arsenal. A London derby against Palace will be a tough test for Spurs especially after Palace’s 5-1 win last week at West Brom, but I am backing Son and Kane to do the business once again to keep them top of the table.

Leicester City v Brighton – Home Win

Leicester got back to winning ways last week thanks to Jamie Vardy’s last gasp winner at Sheffield United and I expect them to continue that here against Graham Potter’s Brighton. The Seagulls are a decent footballing side but that has not always translated into results. They are not easy to beat, but I think at the King Power and with Jamie Vardy amongst the goals once again, plus James Maddison starting to find his best form once again, the Foxes should have more than enough quality to ensure that they pick up the three points here.
