Premier League Acca: 19th & 20th December

We are getting into the thick of things with the Christmas fixture list now and this weekend’s set of games is the start of the festive period. There is this weekend’s matches, followed by the Football League Cup quarterfinals just before Christmas (on the 22nd and 23rd), then two sets of games, one on the 26th and 27th December and the next from the 28th to the 30th. We then round things off with another set of Premier League games on the 2nd and 3rd January.

With at least four games to play for teams over the next couple of weeks, those 12 points up for grabs could make a massive difference for teams battling it out at the top, middle and bottom of the table and if teams pick up points now, or drop points here, it could well determine how the rest of their season pans out.

After a big win against Spurs in midweek, Liverpool now sit at the top of the Premier League table but they face a very tricky trip to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace and in truth, I really don’t like that fixture as one to tip as I can make a case for every possible outcome. So I have focused on games that I think (and that is the best word to use at the moment) have a better chance of success.

However, I must also say that the effects of the shortened season, so many games played by the top teams, is having an effect on performances. None of the big six won at the weekend and in midweek only Liverpool and Manchester United picked up wins. Little wonder that games are so difficult to predict at the moment when we are getting sets of results like this.

Still, you work with what you have and I have taken a look at the data for the games outlined below and hopefully, this fourfold bet may have a good chance of landing us a little pre-Christmas cheer!

Have a very Merry Christmas, good luck with your acca for this weekend and keep your eyes peeled for the next set of trips dropping early on Boxing Day morning!

Bet Analysis: Saturday 19th December

Southampton v Manchester City – Away Win

I must admit, I thought long and hard about including this game on the list this week. Both sides form of late has been a little erratic, despite Southampton now being 3rd in the league table. City’s form has tailed away and this was one of those games where I could look at the data and make a case for any of the three possible results. However, given how Southampton have capitulated against top sides, most notably against Man Utd a few weeks back, I just feel City, who must start picking up wins again, will have that extra edge and enough possession to ensure that they pick up three points here.

Everton v Arsenal – Draw

This is another game where I felt torn between at least two possibilities. I am ruling our an Arsenal win because at the moment, Mikel Arteta’s side don’t seem capable of landing a win at home, let alone on a tough trip to Goodison. However, the Gunners are not conceding many goals and Everton do not score a huge amount themselves. The Toffees are on a good run of form after wins over Chelsea and Leicester pushed them back into the top of the table battle, but they do lack consistency at times and I think Arsenal may well surprise them to pick up a point here.

Bet Analysis: Sunday 20th December

Tottenham v Leicester City- Home Win

Despite what Jose said, Spurs were second best by miles at Anfield in midweek and their 2-1 defeat saw them lose a grip on top spot. Leicester went down to a surprise home defeat to Everton and the Foxes have been guilty of doing that this season, winning some huge games but then losing others at home that appear to be much easier. What Leicester will turn up here? The one that beat Man City 5-2 on the road or the one well beaten by Everton in the week? Truth be told, I think it is more likely to be the latter and I am backing Spurs to get back to winning ways here.

West Brom v Aston Villa – Draw

Sam Allardyce has taken over from Slaven Bilic at West Brom, so Baggies fans can be excited about the free-flowing Brazil 1970 World Cup Winning style of football he will employ to try and save them from the drop. Villa were held by Brighton in midweek and I suspected them may drop points there and I think Big Sam will be very keen to keep a clean sheet here and if he can do that, then I think the Baggies will have a chance of earning themselves another draw.
