Premier League Acca Tip – Sat 19 & Sun 20 September 2020

Well, we had a bit of a mixed bag last week with my selections. Two we hit bang on the money, which I was very happy with given that it was the first week of the season and there are so many unknown factors to consider with that, but the other two games we were a little wide of the mark.

That said, I am happy enough with that as the season gets underway and as teams get into the swing of things over the coming weeks, I am looking forward to improving my hit percentage beyond that and starting the season well with a nice early season win to set up the rest of the year nicely.

This weekend is an intriguing one as for the first time we have all 20 teams playing across the weekend and into Monday. With kick offs staggered to allow for viewing of the games on TV, it does make for a very long weekend (but one that fans can enjoy in full). The action starts on Saturday with Everton, mightily impressive in their win over Tottenham, facing West Brom at Goodison Park at 12.30.

The big game of the weekend comes at Stamford Bridge however as big spending Chelsea take on last season’s title winners Liverpool in what is a real acid test for both teams. Will the money Chelsea have spent help them defeat the Reds who looked very poor defensively albeit against a very impressive Leeds United? Or will the Reds bounce back from that blip last week to keep the London side at arms length?

Man Utd face their first game of the season at home to Crystal Palace while Man City face a very tough trip to Wolves, a team that beat them both home and away in the Premier League last season.  Let’s now take a look at the tips I have put together for this weekend’s games.

Bet Analysis: Saturday 19th September

Everton v West Brom – Home Win

As bad as Tottenham were last week against Everton, I felt that the Toffees were fully deserving of their 1-0 win over Spurs last week. Their newly revamped midfield of Allan, Doucoure and Rodriguez alongside Gomes caused Spurs all sorts of problems and I feel that had they scored a couple more, then it would not have been an unfair scoreline. The Baggies were well beaten at home by Leicester City last weekend and in truth, I don’t see them getting anything out of this trip north. There have been a few false dawns with Everton over the years but Carlo Ancelotti looks like being a great appointment and I expect his team to come away with a comfortable win in this opening game of the weekend.

Leeds United v Fulham – Home Win

Leeds may have lost at Anfield last weekend, but they gained plenty of plaudits and fans for the nature of their performance. It was no surprise to any fan that has followed Bielsa’s team over the past couple of years, but they now need to ally that performance with picking up points and I think at home to fellow newly promoted side Fulham they have a great chance to do that. I thought Fulham looked very poor against Arsenal last week to be honest and unless they can pick up their levels a little, they could well struggle this season. I think this should be a comfortable afternoon for the home side and I expect them to land the win.

Bet Analysis: Sunday 20th September

Southampton v Tottenham – Draw

Two teams I tipped to win last week meet at St Mary’s and neither manager will want to start the season on the back of two defeats. I felt the only thing Southampton lacked against Crystal Palace was the clinical finish in front of goal, whereas Spurs were nothing short of appalling at home to Everton. Based on that form, Saints are the pick here, but Jose Mourinho won’t stand about and accept a performance like that once again. As such I am expecting a strong performance from Spurs here and while I feel they won’t get a win, I feel they should do enough to share the points with the home side.

Chelsea v Liverpool – Home Win

Can Fank Lampard’s expensively assembled team gain revenge for the 5-3 defeat they suffered at Anfield near the end of last season? That game saw a fractious exchange between the two managers and there’s no doubt that Lampard harbours plenty of acrimony towards Liverpool. The Reds won against Leeds but looked very susceptible defensively with van Dijk well below his best. Chelsea will know that any win against a potential top six rival could be crucial and I think given Liverpool’s defensive issues over the last weeks of last season and into this, this could be a positive result for the home side.
