Premier League Matchday 4 Acca – 27th & 28th August

No luck last week, but given there was a somewhat unusual set of results, I can’t remember the last time Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City didn’t win on the same weekend, that is probably not surprising. However, I am hopeful that we can bounce back this week in what looks a more punter-friendly set of games.

It’s certainly been an unusual start to the season with Arsenal the only team with a 100% record after three games, Liverpool without a win and struggling, while Chelsea, Man City and Spurs have all dropped points. Man Utd picked up their first points of the season with a win over Liverpool on Monday night, but they are still some way off the pace at the top of the table.

Teams that are in amongst it though include Brighton, Leeds United (who face off this weekend) as well as Newcastle, Brentford and Crystal Palace, which has given the Premier League a very different look to what has happened in most of the more recent seasons.

Having seen the first three weeks of action, I think things have tightened up in the Premier League. I don’t think Man City, Chelsea, Tottenham and certainly Liverpool are the forces that they once were and I think teams like Arsenal and perhaps even the likes of Brighton, Leeds United and Newcastle are starting to close that gap by improving too.

All of which means that this season is shaping up to be a bit more open than previous years when Man City and Liverpool have tended to run away with things, so with that in mind, I think this does make these types of bets a little more difficult to hit.

That said, I am pretty confident that this quartet of games for this weekend should have a very good chance of landing us a shot at a decent acca return.

Here’s my tips for Matchday 4.

Bet Analysis: Saturday 27th August

Brentford v Everton – Home Win

Despite a 3-2 loss at Fulham last week, Brentford showed plenty of fight, coming from 2-0 down to come back to 2-2 before Mitrovic’s late winner and I think against an Everton team who have picked up just a point this season, and who are struggling under Frank Lampard, they will be very confident of landing another win on home soil. After beating Manchester United 4-0 in their last home game, Thomas Frank will be wanting another solid showing from his team against another famous name in British football and with the Toffees struggling to get past Fleetwood in the Carabao Cup in midweek, I don’t see them having enough to claim their first EPL win of the season here. I am backing Brentford to pick up another big three points in this one.

Brighton v Leeds United – Draw

Both these two teams have had excellent starts to the season with Brighton 5th in the league table, while Leeds United lie in third place and are unbeaten in their three games so far. Both teams have been hugely impressive this season, Brighton in beating Man Utd and West Ham, and Leeds with great wins over Wolves and Chelsea. Neither of these sides has lost many games of late and strangely, Brighton have tended to struggle more at home than they have on the road. Leeds are a dangerous team and have good pace throughout the side and I think that means that they should be more than capable of landing a share of the spoils in this game between two of the more unexpected teams in the top six at present.

Arsenal v Fulham – Home Win

For me, Arsenal have been the most impressive team in the Premier League so far this season and they richly deserve their top spot in the table at present. Whether or not Mikel Arteta’s team can sustain that over the longer term is going to be interesting but certainly they are the team to beat at the moment. Fulham have started life brightly back in the Premier League picking up five points from their three games to lie 7th in the table and I am sure they will try to give Arsenal a test here, but I feel with Gabriel Jesus in great form, the Gunners will have far too much for Fulham to cope with here.

Bet Analysis: Sunday 28th August

Aston Villa v West Ham – Home Win

These two teams have really not hit the ground running this season and I think both Steven Gerrard and David Moyes will be a little worried at how results have gone for their somewhat expensively assembled teams. The Hammers have shown plenty of quality at times, but they are conceding way too many soft goals and you can say the same for Aston Villa. I was tempted by the draw here but I think with home advantage and with a desperate need for points, I can see Villa doing just enough to eke out the win.
