Premier League Midweek Acca – 12th – 14th January 2021

One of the problems of playing football in a pandemic is that you are never sure what is going to happen over the next few days, as was proven last week with Aston Villa’s entire first team squad being forced to isolate for their game with Liverpool. This meant Dean Smith had to play effectively a youth team for their game against a near full-strength Liverpool.

Obviously, had this been apparent when I wrote the tips, I wouldn’t have backed a Villa win. But it does go to show just how tricky things are at the moment as not only have their been a lot more ‘surprise’ results this season, but you are also having to contend with these external factors too in what are very worrying times for teams.

Regardless, the Premier League continues this week with a selection of midweek games. It is actually half of the games from Matchday 18 (the other half of the games are to be played next week in midweek too, after Matchday 19 confusingly!) plus a game postponed from earlier in the season (Burnley v Manchester United).

Most teams in the Premier League will have taken the opportunity to rest a number of key players over the past FA Cup Third Round weekend, so it is going to be interesting to see if we see an uplift in performances from certain teams now that players have had a little rest, probably for the first time since the start of the season.

There’s some big games this week at the top of the table with Man City, Man Utd, Tottenham and Everton all in action, while Liverpool sit things out this week knowing that by the weekend they may no longer be atop of the Premier League. It should make for a very interesting set of games this week.

Here’s the four games I’ve selected for my acca this week.

Bet Analysis: Tuesday 12th January

Sheffield United v Newcastle United – Away Win

Sheffield United are 13 points adrift of safety and are yet to win a game in the EPL this season. In truth, they are having the season now that I thought they would have last season. Chris Wilder’s team cannot buy a win and despite their FA Cup win over Bristol Rovers, which was hard-fought, I can’t see that win inspiring them to another here. Newcastle are 15th in the table and without a win in their last seven, but I do think Steve Bruce is improving things. There’s no doubt being without Lascalles and Saint-Maximin has been a huge blow, but with Callum Wilson in attack, they always look possible of grabbing a goal on the break. There won’t be too many goals or chances in this one but I am backing Newcastle to take at least one of theirs to claim a win.

Wolves v Everton – Draw

A few games ago, Wolves look lost without the injured Raul Jimenez. However, since then they have developed a new way to play using pacy attackers and it has started to work well. They deserved more from both their games with Man Utd and Brighton recently but I think they will be tested here against a very strong and physical Everton side. Carlo Ancelotti’s team look like they can challenge for at least a place in Europe this season and while I think they are much stronger this year, I just feel Wolves will do enough to claim a point from this one.

Bet Analysis: Wednesday 13th January

Aston Villa v Tottenham Hotspur – Away Win

There are a number of factors to consider here, firstly will the game go ahead and secondly, if it does, what sort of shape will the players picked for Aston Villa be in? Given that, I think a win for Spurs is on the cards here. Under Jose Mourinho they have developed a much meaner streak than some of the fragile Spurs sides of recent times. They may not be quite so pretty to watch at times, but they are perhaps more effective and I think that, plus the firepower of Kane and Son in attack, will be enough to take Spurs to victory.

Bet Analysis: Thursday 14th January

Arsenal v Crystal Palace – Home Win

A few weeks back, Palace would have fancied their chances of another good away win here, but Arsenal have won all of their last four in all competitions (albeit needing extra time to beat Newcastle in the FA Cup on Saturday). The Gunners seem to have found their feet after floundering for several weeks and this now looks like a very tough ask for Palace. With Arsenal at home and in form, this should be a comfortable home win for Mikel Arteta’s men.
