Thursday’s Europa League Acca – Thu 21st February

Thursday night sees the second leg of the Europa League Round of 32 played, just one week after the first leg of each game was completed. It is a quick turnaround for Europa League sides as following on from these games, they will face the first and second legs of the Round of 16 in two and three weeks time respectively.

From then on the tournament will match the Champions League in being at the quarterfinal stage, but for the 32 teams competing in games this week, it is a hectic time with little chance between games to get themselves tactically right for this one.

After two sets of treble tips for the games at the weekend and two more for the games on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, I’ve gone back to a fourfold tip for Thursday as all the games in the Round of 32 take place tonight which gives us a nice selection of games from the same competition to pick from.

I’ve not backed either of the English teams in this selection as I think it is a pretty much foregone conclusion that Arsenal and Chelsea will win and similarly, I have also avoided Celtic as I think they’ll lose once again to Valencia in Spain and the odds on the Spanish side doing the double over Brendan Rodgers team are too short to make it a worthwhile bet.

Oddly enough too, all the games I have backed here, I have backed to be home wins, which is not something I usually try to do, but just so happens to be, what I feel is the best chance of a decent return from these games, without backing a massively long odds outside bet.

Here’s my tips for Thursday’s Europa League acca, the scores from the first legs are shown in brackets.

N.B. The Sevilla/Lazio clash has now been moved to Wednesday evening, kicking off at 5pm.

Bet Analysis: Wednesday 20th February

Sevilla (1) v (0) Lazio – Home Win

Sevilla have won this competition five times since 2006, the most of any team in Europe and they produced another Europa League masterclass to defeat Lazio in Rome and take a vital lead into the second leg. The Spanish side just seem to know how to win in the Europa League and it was a deserved victory, as they dominated possession against a surprisingly poor Lazio side. With their dominant home record being what it is, I fully expect Sevilla to complete the job with a straightforward win in the home leg too.

Bet Analysis : Thursday 21st February

Eintracht Frankfurt (2) v (2) Shakhtar Donetsk – Home Win

This was one of the best games of the night last week with Donetsk doing superbly well after having Taras Stepanenko sent off after 11 minutes to hold the talented German side to a draw on home soil. Frankfurt twice led in this game only to be pegged back as Donetsk showed why they have become doubty fighters in Europe over the years. However, I think in Germany and with Frankfurt’s home form being what it is, I fancy the German side to grab a narrow win, perhaps by a single goal, which should be enough to send them into the next phase where they will be a real danger to any team that they are drawn against.

Zenit St Petersburg (0) v (1) Fenerbahce – Home Win

They may not be two of European football’s most famous names but there were plenty of familiar names on show when these two met in the first leg on Tuesday night last week. It was the home side then, Fenerbahce, who came out on top with a 1-0 victory but Zenit are a side that do not travel well in Europe, but they are a much more competent side at home and although the Turkish side have the lead, I think the home team will be confident of turning that deficit around in front of their own fans. The first game was a tight encounter which Fenerbahce did just shade, but I think this could be a very different game and I’m actually expecting Zenit to progress with relative comfort.

Dynamo Kiev (2) v (2) Olympiakos – Home Win

It is fair to say that this game was one of the more surprisingly entertaining games of the Round of 32, with Olympiakos unable to hold on to a 2-1 lead thanks to Kiev netting a deserved 89th minute leveller. The Ukrainian side played very well in Greece and dominated possession and had control of the game, but Olympiakos did look dangerous when they came forward and that is something Kiev will need to be wary of in the second leg. That said, if they can boss the game from midfield as they did in Greece, I feel with home advantage, they should have just enough quality to get the job done and earn a victory that would send them into the Round of 16.
