Tuesday’s Football Accumulator – Tue 12th February

Tuesday this week sees the Champions League get back into action after the break over Christmas and New Year, although there are just two games being played on each night of the Round of 16, with the eight two-legged matches being stretched out over a period of five weeks.

The reason for this is to allow the Europa League to play through two Rounds of games, the Round of 32 followed by the Round of 16, which then means from then on, both competitions will be at the same stage going forward from the quarterfinal stage.

So what this means is that each of our midweek acca bets on Tuesday and Wednesday nights over the coming few weeks will combine the Champions League games with other matches taking place around Europe, starting this week with a couple of matches from The Championship in England.

I’m hoping that this mish-mash of games can still produce us some winners and I think I am overdue some success in the Champions League having been a bit below par in this tournament in the group stages of the tournament before Christmas.

It promises to be an intriguing opening night as in addition to AS Roma taking on an FC Porto side that are unbeaten in any competitions (over 90 minutes) since October, the vastly improved Manchester United face a real test against French runaway league leaders Paris St Germain, albeit without Neymar and possibly also without their centre forward Edinson Cavani.

I’ll be tipping those two games plus a couple of big games in the Championship as in form Bristol City face a stuttering Queens Park Rangers and two Midland’s sides clash as West Brom face Nottingham Forest.

Here’s my fourfold acca for Tuesday night’s games. Join me again tomorrow when we’ll have the same deal in place for Wednesday night.

Bet Analysis: Tuesday 12th February

Bristol City v Queens Park Rangers – Home Win

Nine places and eleven points separate these two teams in the Championship table but on current form, it is Bristol City who are streets ahead of their London rivals heading into Tuesday night’s game. The Robins have gone 14 games unbeaten since losing 2-0 to Leeds back in Novemberand they have won all of their last eight games. In contrast, Q.P.R’s last league win came back on Boxing Day, a 3-0 win over Ipswich, and they have lost all of their last four Championship matches including a 4-3 home defeat to Birmingham on Saturday. All the pointers in this one seem to head towards a Bristol City win, especially with the home side having good form on their own patch and I am not going to differ from what the stats suggest and I’m backing a win for Bristol City here.

West Bromwich Albion v Nottingham Forest – Home Win

Both of these sides have genuine aspirations to earn promotion this season. West Brom lie fourth but with a game in hand over two teams above them and if they win that game, they will go just two points behind Leeds into third. Forest have dropped off the pace into ninth and Martin O’Neill will have his hands full trying to claw back the gap on the teams in the playoff places over the remaining 15 fixtures. Although not a real derby game, this will still be a passionate affair between two well-supported sides. West Brom have slightly the better form of late but there’s little in it and while I can see this being a tight game, I just feel home advantage will be enough for the Baggies to take the points.

Manchester United v Paris St Germain – Home Win

When this fixture was first announced I felt it would be a mere formality for PSG to progress into the quarterfinals of the competition. At that time, United were struggling under Jose Mourinho and PSG were steam-rollering almost everyone they played. A few months later and there’s been a massive change. Now it is United who are playing out of their skin under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and it is PSG who have the concerns with Neymar definitely absent for both legs and now real injury worries over Edinson Cavani too. PSG will make it tough but I am backing United to take a narrow lead into the second leg in Paris in three weeks time.

AS Roma v FC Porto – Draw

Your gut reaction here would conclude an AS Roma win but their recent form hasnt been that great, while FC Porto have remained unbeaten inside 90 minutes in every game they have played since their October loss away to Benfica. The Portuguese side also won five of their six group games, drawing the other, so it is clear they are a very tough team to beat. They also have the better of the head to head record, eliminating AS Roma from the qualification round of this tournament the last time they met. Roma are very tough on home soil though and while I can’t see them losing it, I also can’t see a win, hence I am backing the draw here.
