UEFA Nations League Acca – Saturday 17th November
This weekend we have a break from the Premier League as we head into what is the final international break of the season and the last round of matches in the inaugural UEFA Nations League tournament group stage.
After these games played from Thursday to Saturday and then a second set of games from Sunday to Tuesday, we will know the outcome of all four leagues and all the four groups within each league. As such, which teams will be promoted up a league and those demoted down one, will be known.
We will also know the four teams from League 1 who will top their groups and who will then contest the semifinals and final of the tournament in the summer of 2019.
Given the somewhat unusual format of the group stage, there is still plenty to play for in almost every group in every league over the next few days and with managers treating this competition seriously, the quality of games has been excellent thus far.
With that in mind, we are going to bring you our tip for games taking place on Saturday, with another set of Accanation tips coming for you for tomorrow’s match, including England’s crucial game with Croatia.
Here’s my tips for Saturday’s games.
Saturday’s Nations League Accumulator Tip – 17/11/2018
Turkey cannot win Group 2 in League B of the Nations League, but a win over Sweden would confirm that they cannot be relegated to League C. So there is plenty for th ehome side to play for here. Sweden could still top the group if they can beat Turkey on the road here and then beat Russia in their final game on Tuesday night. It’s a big ask for the team, but it is worth remembering that they did reach the World Cup quarterfinals in the summer. The problem for the Swedes is that the Turks beat them 3-2 in a dramatic match in Solna in September with two goals in the 88th and 92nd minute handing the Turkish team a superb win after they were initially 2-0 down. For that reason, and the fervent home support they enjoy, I am backing Turkey to get the win here.
Albania v Scotland – Draw
The only three team group in Group C has been turned on its head somewhat after the last round of game when Israel racked up two home wins over Scotland and Albania to go top of the group. Scotland are now in second spot three points adrift and they will know that they need at least a point from this game with Albania, their opponents final game in the group, in order to stand a strong chance of earning promotion. The Scots were good value for their 2-0 win over Albania in Glasgow back in September, but on home soil, Albania will be a tough team to beat and they are certainly not the als0-rans that they used to be in World football. As such, this will be a tough night for the Scots but I do feel they have enough quality to earn a vital point.
Italy v Portugal – Home Win
Both these teams are safe from relegation in Group 3 of League A, so it is all-or-nothing for Italy as they seek the win which would give them a fighting chance of topping the group ahead of Portugal. If the Portuguese draw this game, or win either of their games against Italy today or Poland on Tuesday, then they will top the group, so they are very much the favourites to win this and progress into the semifinals of the tournament. Portugal beat Italy 1-0 in September thanks to Andre Silva’s strike and it is going to be interesting to see how they approach this game knowing a draw will suffice. Both sides are strong defensively but I think home advantage is key here so I am backing Italy to emerge as the narrow winners.
Romania v Lithuania – Home Win
The second game from League C in this selection pits an unbeaten Romania against a Lithuania side who look odds on to be relegated into the lower league after this competition ends. Lithuania have lost all four games so far, while Romania have won one but drawn three games to lie in third position. However a win here would put them in a strong position in the group heading into their final game with Montenegro, meaning that if Serbia slip up, then both Romania and Montenegro could capitalise. Given Lithuania’s shocking form at the moment, the fact Romania beat them 2-1 in Lithuania and the fact they are clearly the worst team in this tough group, I am backing the home side to record a strong win here.
