Wednesday’s Football Accumulator – Wed 20th February
For the second week in a row, we have a bumper selection of tips for your midweek accumulators and once again, we have combined Champions League games on Wednesday evening together with a game from the Championship in England to come up with another treble bet for you to consider.
Last week’s tips weren’t quite on the mark as I would have hoped them to be so I am hoping that these trebles will be more on the money. Certainly I have every hope for tonight’s treble which I think stands an outstanding chance of success given the games being played.
In the Championship, playoff-chasing Derby County face Millwall who will be fresh from their exploits in the FA Cup away to AFC Wimbledon at the weekend. Derby too face an FA Cup tie away to Brighton and so it may well be that fatigue could play a key role in this game, especially with both sides also in action in midweek last week too.
The final two games of the Champions League Round of 16 first legs will also be played tonight with the highlight being Atletico Madrid facing a Juventus side that have dropped just six points in Serie A all season long. However, Atletico have a superb record against Italian sides and something could well give when the two teams clash at the Wanda Metropolitano, the stadium that will host the final in May.
The other game sees Manchester City travelling to the VELTINS Arena to take on a Schalke 04 side that are the weakest team left in the competition and Pep Guardiola and his team should be confident of earning a good result to take back to the Etihad for the second leg in three weeks time.
Here’s my selection of tips for this week’s treble bet.
It’s a busy period of games for both these teams with a hectic league program and the fact that both were involved in the FA Cup at the weekend, as such, it is likely both these teams will be suffering a little from fatigue for this clash at Pride Park. Of the two teams, Derby have the better league record by a considerable margin as they lie 7th compared to Millwall’s 20th in the table. Millwall however do like making life tricky for teams and they are seldom well beaten by any side. Derby though have some outstanding young attacking talent and I think that youthful energy may well be the key to them getting the result they need here to keep them in with a chance of playoffs or perhaps even automatic promotion if they can really pick up their results over the last third of the season.
Atletico Madrid v Juventus – Draw
I think this is one of the most difficult games in the Round of 16 in the Champions League to call, not just in terms of the result on the night, but in who will eventually go through to the next round. Juventus seem to be the obvious pick given their excellent domestic record and very solid Champions League campaign so far, but Atletico have an outstanding record against Italian sides and Diego Simeone certainly seems to have the knowhow to ensure his side gets the better of these encounters. Juventus though have Cristiano Ronaldo, for so long Atletico’s nemesis when he played at Real and I can see him being a problem for the Spaniards once again here. I find it hard to see either team losing this game, but I also find it hard to see one of them winning it, hence the draw is the sensible bet to make.
Schalke 04 v Manchester City – Away Win
I’d like to make a convincing case for Schalke 04 to have any chance of causing a big upset in this game but in truth, there’s no way that I can. The German side have been woefully short in the Bundesliga this season and it was only by virtue of being in one of the weaker Champions League groups that they managed to squeeze their way unconvincingly into the Round of 16. City in contrast have been in superb form of late and have swept better teams than Schalke 04 aside in confident fashion, although their performances in the Champions League so far have not quite matched their domestic form. Even so, I am expecting a comfortable evening once again for City fans as they earn a lead to take into the second leg in Manchester.
