Weekend EPL Acca – 16th & 17th January 2021

It is always more enjoyable putting together a set of acca tips on a weekend or midweek when there is an absolutely huge game to enjoy as part of if and that is very much the case this weekend as top of the table Manchester United head down the M62 to face second-placed Liverpool at Anfield in what could well be one of the defining games of the season.

That game takes place at 4.30pm on Sunday, but there are a number of other games taking place before then including some intriguing matches including a Wolves v West Brom midlands derby clash, Leicester facing Southampton while Manchester City will face a tricky task at home to Crystal Palace.

Other notable fixtures include Sheffield United, who won their first game of the season at home to Newcastle in midweek, hoping to make it two wins in a row when Spurs visits Bramall Lane on Sunday, while on Saturday Leeds face Brighton and there is a London derby as close rivals Fulham, who have drawn all their last five Premier League games, take on Chelsea.

The midweek selection was just mush and wasn’t helped by one of the games being called off, plus in the others we saw Sheff Utd get their first win in 18 attempts and then Brighton spurned a number of chances to get a goal against City, Everton grabbed a late winner against Wolves which spoiled a big win on that game…I just have the feeling the gods of fate are not being too kind to me at the moment.

Anyway, you can wallow in self-pity, or you can roll up your sleeves and battle through it and I intend to do the latter, starting with this selection of games for the weekend.

Bet Analysis: Saturday 16th January

Leeds Utd v Brighton – Home Win

Leeds home record is not the best, the fifth worst in the EPL, while Brighton have the sixth worst away record. However, I feel after their somewhat shocking defeat at Crawley Town in the FA Cup last weekend, Leeds will have plenty to prove to their fans and manager. Brighton have proven to be a tough team to beat though and they have picked up three times as many points on the road as they have at home this season. They made Manchester City sweat for the win in midweek, but I think all that travelling, plus the fact that Leeds had a break ahead of this game, does swing the balance in favour of the home side, though not by much.

Fulham v Chelsea – Draw

Chelsea come into this game on the back of a worrying slump in form. Four defeats, one win and a draw in their last six games has seen them drop down to 9th in the table and has heaped pressure on manager Frank Lampard. Fulham have not win in eight EPL games, but they did win in the FA Cup last week and they have drawn all of their last five games in the Premier League including draws with Liverpool, Southampton and Spurs in that run. Scott Parker seems to have made this side much more difficult to beat and with Chelsea’s confidence low at the moment, I am backing the home side to snatch a point to heap yet more pressure on Lampard here.

Bet Analysis: Sunday 17th January

Sheffield Utd v Tottenham Hotspurs – Away Win

The Blades earned their first win of the season in midweek at home to Newcastle United in midweek, with the latter paying the price for Ryan Fraser’s stupid dismissal just before half time. Chris Wilder will be hoping that win instils some confidence in his team ahead of the visit of a Spurs side who were held at home by Fulham in midweek in what was a disappointing result for them. Spurs have had just one win in their last six in the league and Jose Mourinho will know his team needs to put that right. The Blades may have won in midweek, but I think Kane and Co will lead the visitors to victory on Sunday.

Liverpool v Manchester United – Draw

After going top by three points by beating Burnley in midweek, Manchester United players have been bullish about their chances at Anfield on Sunday, especially with an away record that has seen them drop just two points of of 24 available on the road in the Premier League this season. They face a Liverpool side who have not win in the league in three, picking up just two points from the last nine and who are still racked with injuries in defence. However, at home the Reds have also picked up 22 out of 24 points this season and they are unbeaten in their last 67 EPL home games. Six of the last ten games between these two have finished as a draw and I think that is the safest bet to back here.
