Weekend Premier League Tips – 8th & 9th May

We’re heading to the business end of the season now and this midweek’s games have thrown one of Saturday’s fixtures into a whole new light. All of which makes for an intriguing set of tips for this coming Saturday and Sunday.

In midweek, Manchester City beat Paris St Germain 2-0 to reach the Champions League final 4-1 on aggregate, while on Wednesday night, Chelsea repeated that scoreline to beat Real Madrid 3-1 on aggregate to set up an all-English Champions League final. The second one since 2018.

This makes Saturday’s game between City and Chelsea all the more intriguing, especially when you consider a win for City would hand them the league title, and allow them to rest key players over the remaining weeks of the season. Something Chelsea, who are battling for a top four spot are unlikely to be able to do.

Then on Thursday Manchester United moved into the Europa League final where they will face Villarreal in Gdansk after the Spanish side overcame a very lacklustre Arsenal 2-1 in their semi final.  That gives Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team a shot at landing a Champions League spot by winning that competition too. They now travel to Aston Villa hoping to preserve their unbeaten away record in the Premier League.

Other big games this weekend include Tottenham’s trip to Leeds United on Saturday lunchtime in what looks like a tricky game for Ryan Mason’s team against a Leeds side who have lost just one of their last five.

The most intriguing game comes on Sunday as West Ham take on Everton in a game that both sides will feel is a must win contest if they are to further their Champions League qualification hopes, especially with some of their rivals having tough contests and the potential to drop points this weekend.

Let’s take a look at my tips for this weekend’s acca.

Bet Analysis: Saturday 8th May

Leeds United v Tottenham Hotspurs – Draw

A change of manager can sometimes give impetus to a team and that seemed to happen to Spurs when Ryan Mason was appointed until the end of the season in place of Jose Mourinho. Gareth Bale struck a hattrick last weekend in a 4-0 win over Sheffield United but this is a much trickier prospect against a Leeds side that have lost just one of their last five. Marcelo Bielsa’s side will play as they do in every game and I can see that causing problems for Spurs, but similarly, I can see Spurs attack causing Leeds problems too. This could be any score but I do feel a draw is the most likely outcome.

Manchester City v Chelsea – Home Win

The rehearsal for the Champions League final at the end of May, Manchester City and Chelsea both made it into the final with excellent home wins to back up strong away displays in midweek and with City needing just three points to clinch the league title, they could wrap that up here on Saturday. It would also allow Pep Guardiola to rest players ahead of that Champions League final, while Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel would likely not have that luxury. With home advantage and having had 24-hours extra to recover, I think City will land the win here that earns them the Premier League title.

Bet Analysis: Sunday 9th May

Aston Villa v Manchester United – Away Win

Manchester United confirmed their Europa League final place in midweek despite a 3-2 loss in Rome, a rare away defeat for United. However a 6-2 home victory was more than sufficient to ensure that the progressed. After a solid start, Aston Villa’s season has petered out a little in recent times, although they have picked up four points in their last two games. United’s away from in the Premier League though is superb and I am backing them to continue that by picking up another three points here.

Arsenal v West Brom – Home Win

Can Arsenal pick themselves up after their midweek Europa Semifinal loss to Villarreal? That defeat has effectively ended the Gunners season with little else to play for and stuck in midtable in the Premier League. That said, the pressure is on Mikel Arteta to improve on that over the last few games and they should be confident of a home win against a West Brom side that look set to be confirmed as relegated over the next few weeks. The Gunners badly need something to boost the morale of their fans here and while a home win against West Brom will be scant consolation, it will be a welcome three points.
