Champions League Acca – 14th & 15th September
The Champions League is back and this year’s competition looks like being an absolute cracker with a number of massive games set to be played over the coming weeks in the Group Stages alone, that’s before we reach the knockout phase when things get very tasty after Christmas and the New Year.
We’ve got three teams that reached the semifinals of this tournament over the last two seasons drawn into one group (Man City, PSG and Red Bull Leipzig), as well as Liverpool, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid in another, plus Chelsea and Juventus in one group with Bayern Munich and Barcelona in another.
It all points to some very big games for these teams over the coming months as they play out their six group games, aiming to secure a place in the top two of the table to contest the knockout phase in the New Year.
I’ll be honest and say that last season, I wasn’t very happy with my Champions League tips. I know I landed one late on in the campaign, but I felt I should have done a bit better especially in the Group Stages, so I will be trying to land a big winner over the course of the six matchdays of action.
And to that end, here are my tips for the games that are taking place this week to kick off this year’s Group Stages.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s return inspired Manchester United to a big home win over Newcastle United at the weekend and although Young Boys lie third in the Swiss table, they are going to be very much the underdogs here. United will be aware that Swiss teams have caused English sides a few problems in recent years, but with the quality that United possess now in attack and also defensively, I feel they should be very confident of kicking off their Champions League campaign with a very important win on the road.
Barcelona v Bayern Munich – Away Win
Two of the giants of European football clash in the Nou Camp on Tuesday. Last time they met, Bayern Munich absolutely humiliated Barcelona 8-2 in a single-legged quarterfinal, the game which perhaps pre-empted the situation that Barcelona now find themselves in today. With a number of key players having left the club and the financial situation dire, they are the underdogs in this game for me against a Bayern Munich side that I feel are one of the top three teams in Europe and who are exceptionally consistent. They won’t be fazed taking on Barcelona in the Nou Camp, especially without Messi and as such I am expecting the German side to come away with a very big three points in this game.
Bet Analysis: Wednesday 15th September
Inter Milan v Real Madrid – Home Win
These two teams met at the same stage last season (and Shakhtar Donetsk were also in the same group last year too) so there will be a degree of familiarity between the two that you don’t ordinarily get. Real won both games last season, winning 3-2 at home and 2-0 on the road against an Inter side that I felt were more focused on winning Serie A than this competition. This time around, I think it could be different, Bale may be missing for Real and although Inter have lost some key players, they still have some quality attacking talent and at home, I think they are more than good enough to pick up a win against the Spanish 13-time winners of this competition.
Liverpool v AC Milan – Home Win
This will be the first meeting between these teams outside of a Champions League Final. Liverpool were winners on penalties in Istanbul, coming back from a 3-0 deficit at half time to draw 3-3 before snatching the win. Milan though gained revenge a couple of years later when Pippo Inzaghi’s two goals gave Milan a 2-1 win. Between them they have won this tournament 13 times and Milan have a squad packed with talent, but then again, so do Liverpool and with the Reds form being much improved now that key defensive players like Virgil Van Dijk and Joel Matip have returned to the team, I think that the home side will do enough to claim the win.
