Premier League & FA Cup Acca – 17th & 18th March
We were just one result out in my midweek Champions League acca bet and truth be told, having watched how FC Porto laid siege to the Inter Milan goal in the last 15 minutes or so of the game, how that game didn’t end up a Porto win is beyond me.
I’ve still got my Europa League acca to go this week and I’m hopeful that can turn me a profit, but if not then this weekend’s combined Premier League and FA Cup accumulator bet stands a very good chance.
It’s a combined bet because we have the four FA Cup Quarter Finals taking place across Saturday and Sunday (which features just four Premier League teams), plus we then have a good number of Premier League games taking place from Friday through to Sunday too.
Obviously I’ve ruled out last night’s game between Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United from that list of games, but that still leaves me with around 10 or so matches to pick from.
Unfortunately, those of you seeking a longer odds bet are going to be a bit disappointed as the way things have worked out this weekend, the best selections and the ones that go with the form are all shorter-priced options.
However, after so many near misses in recent weeks, I think I am overdue a bit of luck and these shorter priced options have been pretty good to me over the years.
One of the surprise packages of the season has been Brentford’s challenge for a European place, while Leicester, a team you would have backed to do precisely that at the start of the season, have struggled for form for the vast majority of the season and they are now firmly embroiled in a battle against the drop. Taking on Brentford at home is not an easy game for even the top teams, let alone a team that has lost all its last three games and who are struggling for confidence. As such, I can’t go against the bookies here and I am backing Brentford to claim the win.
Wolves v Leeds United- Home Win
Both these teams still have very serious relegation concerns and indeed Leeds find themselves in the drop zone at the moment. Wolves had occupied a slot in the relegation zone for a significant chunk of the year but they have picked up points in recent months to slowly get themselves out of those drop zone spots. Both these teams can play some lovely football, but they are also susceptible to defensive mishaps. Leeds don’t really seem to have grasped how Javi Gracia want’s them to play just yet, which is why in this game, I am backing the home side to land a narrow win.
Aston Villa v Bournemouth – Home Win
Bournemouth put up a fine display in beating an out of sorts Liverpool last weekend and they now travel to Aston Villa hopeful of picking up more points to take them out of the relegation zone. Villa are not one of the teams threatened by relegation and under Unai Emery, they have made good progress up the table, without being hugely consistent, but by earning enough wins amongst the draws and defeats to progress towards safety. Part of that success has been the form of Ollie Watkins of late, with the Villa man looking excellent and very sharp in front of goal in recent weeks. With home advantage too, I am backing the Villains to continue their improvement by landing the win here.
Bet Analysis: Sunday 19th March
Manchester United v Fulham – Home Win
Fulham probably would not have wanted to draw Manchester United in the quarter finals of the FA Cup given their very poor record against the Red Devils in recent times, but that is the hand that they have been dealt and they will be hoping to cause a big upset here. United’s loss to Liverpool was more a blip than a total collapse of the team and they bounced back well from that, although the draw with Southampton last weekend was a bit of a disappointment. United will know that the FA Cup is their best option for success this season, along with the Europa League and they will be keen to continue their good run of form in this tournament, winning all of their previous games in this year’s tournament 3-1, at home. Fulham will want to avoid that of course, but I think that the final scoreline will likely look something like that if I am honest.
