Champions League Acca – Matchday 3 – 24th, 25th October

This week sees the first of a two-part double header of games in the Group Stages of the Champions League. On Matchweek 3 and 4, two teams face off against each other home and away on respective game weeks as we reach the midway point of the Group Stage.

These two games can be pivotal in deciding a teams chances of reaching the knockout stage. Two wins and their fortunes in the group markedly improve, two defeats, or just a point or two claimed from the games, and a place in the knockout phase can look alarmingly distant.

One such team in dire need of a Gameweek 3 and 4 win double is Manchester United, who have lost both their games in their Group so far (to Bayern and Galatasatay) and who now face FC Copenhagen at home on Gameweek 3 and then away a fortnight later.

Similarly, Arsenal will be keen to get something positive from their awkward trip to Spain to face Sevilla, who have recovered from a dismal start in La Liga to lose just one of their last five games (to Barcelona) and they held Real Madrid to a 1-1 draw at the weekend.

on Wednesday we see Celtic taking on Atletico Madrid at Celtic Park, with the Spanish side having won all of their last five games in all competitions. Newcastle, who stunned PSG 4-1 last time out, now face Borussia Dortmund at home, while Manchester City take a trip to Switzerland to take on Young Boys, knowing that two wins in the next two games will likely confirm them as winners of their group.

Other big games see PSG taking on AC Milan, Feyenoord facing Lazio, Galatasaray taking on Bayern Munich and Union Berlin hosting Napoli.

I have been pretty close to another win the last few sets of tips, so let’s hope that this midweek fourfold hits the mark and remember to check back Thursday for my Europa League tips.

Champions League Bet Analysis: Tuesday 24th October

Sevilla v Arsenal – Draw

After starting the season incrediblu poorly by their own standards, Sevilla have found a little form of late. Their only defeat in their last five came away to Barcelona and they held Real Madrid to a draw at the weekend. The Spaniards have drawn both of their opening games with Lens and PSV and now take on Arsenal, who are just a point ahead of their Spanish opponents. The Gunners lost to Lens last time out in the Champions League and another defeat here would see them drop out of the knockout qualification spots. While their Premier League form is excellent, their form in this competition has been hit and miss so far. Both teams had tough games coming into this important game and I can see this being another close and tight affair and I think the draw is the smart pick here.

Union Berlin v Napoli – Away Win

Union Berlin’s first Champions League campaign has been a tough baptism for the German side as they have lost their first two matches in the competition. They now face another tough test with a double-header of games against Italian Champions Napoli. The NEapolitans had a somewhat sluggish start to their Serie A campaign but have improved of late and they have won three of their last five games. That loss did come at home to Real Madrid in this competition. Berlin have been involved in some close games, giving up a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 in the 94th minute at home to Braga and losin to another 94th minute winner away to Real Madrid. However, the German side have lost all their last five games and I think with confidence low, Napoli are a good bet to take the points here.

Champions League Bet Analysis: Wednesday 25th October

Celtic v Atletico Madrid – Away Win

Two games in and it has been two defeats for Celtic in the Champions League as they were beaten 2-0 by Feyenoord in the Netherlands and then lost 2-1 at home to Lazio, conceding a 95th minute goal to the Italians to drop three more points. Atletico sit atop of Group A with four points, the same number as Lazio after drawing with the Italian side 1-1 in Rome in their opener and then earning a dramatic 3-2 win over Feyenoord at the Wanda Metropolitano last time out. All the games in this group have been very close and Celtic are a little unfortunate to have 0 points. They’ll make life hard for Atletico here, but I think the Spanish side have so much quality that they’ll do enough to claim the win.

Newcastle Utd v Borussia Dortmund – Home Win

Newcastle produced the performance of the last round in the Champions League when they scuttled Paris St Germain 4-1 at St. James’ Park in what was an outstanding performance by Eddie Howe’s team. Next up in Group F is Dortmund, who are bottom of the table with just one point but who are still a high quality team. The German side have won all their last five Bundesliga games, and lie fourth on 20 points the same as Bayern Munich. Newcastle warmed up for this game with a resounding 4-0 win over Crystal Palace  and the goalscoring form they are in at the moment means that I think that the home side could take real control of this group with a win here.
