Champions League Acca – Matchday 6 – 12th & 13th December

We are now at the final set of Group Stage games in the Champions League and in the main, a lot of the qualification issues have been sorted across many of the groups.

Most groups know which teams will be playing in the Knockout Phase of the competition in the New Year. A lot of groups also know their third place finishing team dropping into the Europa League.

And there are also a number of confirmed seeds for the draw for the Round of 16, which takes place in Nyon just before Christmas.

Let’s clarify how things look in terms of qualifying: Teams shown in bold will be a seeded team in the draw, teams in italics are confirmed as finishing 3rd in the group and will enter the Europa League Playoffs.

  • Group ABayern Munich (Seed)
  • Group BArsenal (Seed), PSV Eindhoven
  • Group CReal Madrid (Seed),
  • Group D – Real Sociedad, Inter
  • Group E – Atletico Madrid, Lazio – Feyenoord 3rd
  • Group F – Borussia Dortmund
  • Group G Manchester City (Seed), Red Bull Leipzig- Young Boys 3rd
  • Group H – Barcelona

Only four qualifiers are not known heading into Week 6 and all groups have at least one team confirmed as qualified, which does pose the question, how fair will it be if some teams field a weakened side for their game, if they have already qualified?

So there’s plenty to think about when considering which games to put together for our acca this week. Speaking of which, here’s those tips!

CL Bet Analysis: Tuesday 12th December

FC Copenhagen v Galatasaray – Away Win

These two teams are in a situation whereby a draw could see both of them knocked out of the qualifying positions they hold, should Manchester United beat Bayern. Therefore, both teams need to win this game, moreso Galatasaray who know that only a win will put them through. Copenhagen also need a win to be sure of qualifying but could qualify with a draw and with Manchester United losing or drawing to Bayern Munich. However, my feeling is that both these teams know a win is likely to be required and as such, I expect another good open game as we had in the 2-2 draw in Turkey between the two. The Danish side have hit a bit of poor form at the wrong time here though, which means I am going to go for the Turkish side to claim a vital win here.

Manchester United v Bayern Munich – Away Win

Manchester United must win this game and then hope the other game between Copenhagen and Galatasaray in Denmark finishes as a draw, if they are to qualify for the knockout stage of this competition. They face a Bayern Munich side who could rest players for this game, although with a winter break on the horizon, their fixture congestion isn’t as bad as United’s over the Christmas period. Plus Bayern have such a talented squad that they can bring in international quality replacements for players they rest. As such, this will still be a very tough game for United at home and their European form is so poor that I think the German side will still come away with the win here.

CL Bet Analysis: Wednesday 13th December

Borussia Dortmund v Paris St. Germain- Away Win

Paris St. Germain are the only team to have beaten Borussia Dortmund in this group and it is for that reason that the Germans have already qualified for the knockout phase of the competition. However, they will know that coveted seeded spot in the draw for the next round is up for grabs against PSG here. PSG though know that they must win in order to not only qualify, but top the group by virtue of their better head to head record over Dortmund. If they fail to win here, then they risk being eliminated if either Newcastle or Milan should win in the game on Tyneside. That said, I feel PSG are in great form at the moment and I am backing them to take the points here and with it the seeded qualifying spot.

Newcastle United v AC Milan – Home Win

I have a feeling that events in Dortmund may mean that this game is effectively a playoff to finish third in this group and earn a spot in the Europa League, but at the start of this game both these teams will know that a win is a must and then the other game can take care of itself. A draw does no good to either team in terms of qualifying for the Champions League Knockout Stage, but would ensure that Newcastle finish third. Newcastle have been heavily hit through injuries in recent times and they were well beaten last time out at Everton. Milan though do not have the best away record of late and with both teams needing a win, I think we’ll see a more open and entertaining game than we did when the teams battled out a 0-0 draw on Week 1.
