Champions League Acca Tip – Matchday 5 – 28th & 29th November

There are just two matchdays remaining in the Champions League Group Stages and this week sees the penultimate round of games.

We saw the first teams qualify for the knockout phase on Matchday 4, and it is likely we will see a number more confirm their place in the Round of 16 in the new year with this set of games.

However, for some teams, it will likely go down to Matchday 6, and don’t forget there is also the battle for third place in the Champions League Group up for grabs as those eight teams will enter the Europa League Playoff stage, facing off against the teams that finish second in their Europa League group.

So there is plenty up for grabs across all three European competitions this week but the action starts Tuesday with the Champions League.

Six teams are already confirmed in the Round of 16 and they are:

  • Bayern Munich
  • Inter Milan
  • Red Bull Leipzig
  • Manchester City
  • Real Madrid
  • Real Sociedad

Of those six qualifiers, only Bayern Munich are confirmed as a seed in the draw for the Round of 16 as yet, although some of the six listed could join them this week, depending on results.

It’s a big week for the British teams left in the competition. Celtic have just one point and need two wins to stand any chance of progressing from their group. Man Utd have just three points and face crucial games away to Galatasaray and at home to Bayern Munich if they are to progress, while Newcastle’s two losses to Dortmund have seen them drop to bottom of their group.

So there’s lots up for grabs this week for the vast majority of teams, so let’s take a look at my selections for my CL acca.

CL Bet Analysis: Tuesday 28th November

Manchester City v Red Bull Leipzig – Home Win

Manchester City put seven past Red Bull Leipzig in the quarterfinals of this competition last season. They went on to win the Champions League of course but it took two late goals from Alvarez and Doku to earn City a win over RB in Leipzig, so I can’t see City having this game quite all their own way as they did last season. Add to that City were held at home by Liverpool at the weekend and you have some reasons why Leipzig should make this a closer game. It will be closer I am sure, but I still think that Manchester City will run out comfortable winners and with it claim top spot in the group and a seeded position in the knockout stage draw in late December.

Paris St Germain v Newcastle United – Home Win

At St James’ Park, Newcastle produced arguably their best ever Champions League performance by destroying PSG 4-1 to go top of Group F. However, after two narrow defeats to Dortmund, Newcastle now find themselves at the bottom of the group and battling to stay in the competition. Newcastle need at least a point to stay in the hunt in this group but it looks a tough ask against a PSG side who have won their last two league games 3-0 on the road and 5-2 at home to a talented AS Monaco side. The Parisian side will also know that a win here would not only likely eliminate Newcastle, but could also put them through depending on the result in the other game. Despite that great win at Chelsea at the weekend, I can’t see Newcastle picking up the win here.

CL Bet Analysis: Wednesday 29th November

Galatasaray v Manchester United- Home Win

This is a game that Manchester United cannot afford to lose and in truth, must win if they are to stay in with a chance of finishing second in this group behind Bayern Munich.  With Copenhagen and Galatasaray both holding a points advantage over United, there’s no room for error. United must win both their games and hope that Copenhagen do not, in order to progress. However, if they slip up here, then their chances. of going through, or even finishing third, take a big hit. It is worth remembering though that Galatasaray put in a fantastic display at Old Trafford to beat United on the night and at home, with a fervent support behind them, they are going to be fired up to get a result here. United’s best hope is that Galatasaray have not won at home in the CL this season, losing to Bayern and drawing with Copenhagen, but I think the Turkish side will do enough to get the win here.

Benfica v Inter Milan – Away Win

Group D hasn’t seen too many goals scored, but most of them have gone against Benfica who have endured a miserable qualifying campaign scoring just one and conceding seven goals in losing all four games so far. Inter in contrast have won three and drawn one and they also sit at the top of the Serie A table, meaning that they are very much in form. Domestically, Benfica’s form of late has been better as they have won their last four games, including the derby match with Sporting in Lisbon. However, I think Inter Milan are a step up in class from most Portuguese sides and I think that they will have the quality to put Benfica to the sword here.
