Champions League Acca: Tue 20th, Wed 21st October

This week sees the return of European action to our schedules as both the Champions League and Europa League Group Stages get underway. In this article, we are focusing on putting together four games into a Champions League accumulator to run across both Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

The four English teams in the tournament are all in action with Chelsea facing Sevilla and Manchester United away to Paris St Germain on Tuesday night, while on Wednesday Liverpool head to Amsterdam to take on Ajax, while Manchester City face off against FC Porto at the Etihad.

We’ve incorporated a couple of those games into our selections this week together with a couple of cracking other matches featuring a couple of teams from Serie A, as well as German side who will have real aspirations of going far in the tournament this year.

There’s no point denying that I was a little disappointed with how my tips went in the Champions League last year, so I am hoping that this time around, we can start off the Group Stages in a much more positive frame of mind with this quartet of tips.

Bet Analysis: Tuesday 20th October

Chelsea v Sevilla – Draw

Frank Lampard’s side have been given a somewhat tough opening to their Champions League tilt this season as Sevilla, winners of the Europa League last season, following on from Chelsea who won it the year before, are a very good side and who have recently picked up a draw against Barcelona in La Liga. The Spanish side are one of the most experienced European teams and though their main success has been in the Europa League, they have produced some stellar results against English teams in recent times, notably Liverpool and Manchester United. Make no mistake, this is going to be a very tough game for Chelsea and while I can’t see the Blues landing the win here, I think they have enough attacking talent to pick up a draw.

Lazio v Borussia Dortmund – Draw

I think these are two of the most interesting teams in this year’s Champions League. Lazio have done well in Serie A over the last couple of seasons but have failed to shine on the European stage, putting in somewhat lacklustre performances in that time. Dortmund too have done well domestically, but have also really not quite hit top form in Europe. I do feel both teams have the quality to perhaps make a much greater impact in this tournament this year and both have a number of individual players who can make the difference in tight games. That said, both will also not want to get this campaign off to a losing start and as such, I think both managers may approach the game more with avoiding defeat in mind, than securing a win and as such, I feel this too may also end all-square.

Bet Analysis: Wednesday 21st October

Ajax v Liverpool – Away Win

There’s no doubt that Liverpool will be burning with anger at their exit from the Champions League last season, when two goalkeeping blunders from Adrian handed Atletico Madrid a 3-2 win at Anfield and sent the Reds out of the tournament. I think Jurgen Klopp’s men will want to perform well in this competition once again this season and I fancy them to pick up a win against a very youthful Ajax side that has once again turned to its youth academy to replace a number of key players that have left for pastures new in recent years. This will be a close game, but I think on the counter attack, Liverpool should have enough talent to secure a narrow win.

FC Midtjylland v Atalanta – Away Win

This young Atalanta side is really something special and it is worth remembering that they were so close to eliminating Paris St Germain in last year’s quarterfinals. They have grown in stature since then and I think they are a certainty to pick up a win against the Danish side Midtjylland who are well organised, and strong physically, but who I think lack the attacking threat that will cause the Italians any real problems. This should be a very comfortable evening for Atalanta if they can find their top form and I do expect them to be very strong contenders in their group this season with Ajax and Liverpool.
