Champions League – Group Stage Tips – Week 1 – 19th, 20th September

After several qualification rounds, the Champions League Group Stage is back and the first of what will be six separate weeks of fixtures is set to be played across Tuesday and Wednesday nights this week.

Current holders of the Champions League trophy, Manchester City will be defending their title, while three other Premier League teams, Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle United along with SPL giants Celtic, will also be involved in this phase of the tournament.

The aim is to finish in the top two of your group to qualify for the knockout phase of the tournament in the New Year. The third place team in each group will drop into the Europa League knockout phase in January.

Last year, we had some decent returns from our European tips, and in a change from what has happened in the past, it was the Champions League that offered me the better winnings last season, compared to the Europa League.

Having made a great start to the season, with a fantastic win on the very first weekend of the campaign, I am confident that we can take this form into European Football’s Premiere competition!

There are two huge games involving English teams this week as Newcastle United travel to Italy to face AC Milan on Tuesday night and then on Wednesday we have a repeat of the 1999 Champions League Final as Bayern Munich take on Manchester United at the Allianz Arena in Germany.

Another eye-catching fixture on Tuesday night is the other game in Newcastle’s group which sees a new-look Paris St Germain hosting Borussia Dortmund.

Let’s take a look now at the fixtures I have selected for our first Champions League acca of the season.

Champions League Bet Analysis: Tuesday 19th September

AC Milan v Newcastle United – Home Win

Ahead of the weekend, Milan have won all of their three Serie A games and lie second to city rivals Inter in the early table. They should, therefore, be more confident of putting some better displays in during this season’s Champions League campaign. Something that they have not done in the past couple of years. Newcastle’s return to the competition is a huge boost for the club but manager Eddie Howe has seen his team drawn in the toughest group. Also, Newcastle come into this game on the back of three straight defeats and with Sven Botman also injured, this looks like being a tricky first game back in the Champions League for the Toon Army.

Lazio v Atletico Madrid – Draw

Lazio started the season poorly in Serie A with two defeats in their opening two games, but then they surprised many with a 2-1 win over Champions Napoli, in Naples to kick start their season. Atletico have been impressive, winning two and drawing one of their three games thus far and they rattled in seven goals in their last away game in La Liga ahead of this weekend’s action. While I am convinced Atletico are the real deal, I am not so sure that Maurizio Sarri’s Lazio team are quite as strong as that result in Napoli suggests. However, at home, I think they’ll be tough to break down and as such, I think this opening game of the group will end in a draw.

Champions League Bet Analysis: Wednesday 20th September

Bayern Munich v Manchester United – Home Win

What a game to kick off Wednesday night as Bayern Munich and Manchester United lock horns once again. A repeat of the dramatic 1999 final, Bayern have started their domestic season with a 100% winning record in the Bundesliga, though they were well beaten by Red Bull Leipzig in the Super Cup before that. United’s form this season has seen them win both home games so far, but lose on the road twice too ahead of this weekend’s game at home to Brighton. That away form is a real worry for me here when it comes to United getting something from the away trip to Munich. With Harry Kane in good form and Munich already looking dangerous, I think the German side will claim the win here.

Braga v Napoli – Away Win

Braga are perhaps not the best known of Portuguese teams, but they are regular qualifiers for European competition over the years and they have performed well, especially in the Europa League. Napoli were one of the star teams of last season, winning Serie A and putting in some sensational performances in Europe too. They began their defence of the Serie A title with two wins in their opening games but surprisingly lost to Lazio. Having kept their two key creative and goalscoring stars in Osimhen and Kvaratskhelia over the summer, they will be very dangerous once again in Europe. Braga have already lost and drawn in their four Portuguese league games this season and in truth, I think they’ll find the quality that this Napoli team possesses a little too hot to handle.
