Champions League Midweek Acca – Tue 16 & Wed 17 April

We were so close to landing a win last week and I am confident that this week’s selection in the Champions League also has a great chance of success. The flip side of that is that the odds are not the longest you will ever see, but I’d rather win a small amount, than lose a potentially larger sum.

I think this week’s tips are one of the rare occasions where pretty much the first three games on the coupon are almost self-evident how they will turn out, should form and the quality of the teams play out as expected. That just leaves the final game, between Liverpool and FC Porto in Portugal as the one where I think there is more scope for a few results.

It is a bit odd that the teams playing on Tuesday have six days between their games, while those on Wednesday have eight, but I suppose the flip side of that is that the Tuesday teams this week have longer to prepare for their league games at the weekend, whereas the Wednesday teams don’t.

After being just one Sheffield United goal short of a win last week and predicting the right outcome in three of the four Champions League quaretrfinals first legs, I am confident that this selection spanning two days this week has a great chance of success.

Here’s how I see each of the four second leg ties panning out. The scores from the first leg are shown in brackets for each game.

Bet Analysis: Tuesday 16th April

Barcelona (1) v (0) Manchester United – Home Win

Barcelona were criticised for putting in, for them, a below par display at Old Trafford last week, yet amongst all that, it is worth recognising that they still won the game 1-0. Luke Shaw shepherded Lionel Messi particularly well in that game but the England left back is suspended here and I think that doesn’t bode well for United. Barcelona are unbeaten in 30 games at home and even despite their heroics in Paris in the last round, I cannot see United having the ability to turn the form book on its head and come away with a win here. Barcelona should win this and win it relatively comfortably.

Juventus (1) v (1) Ajax Amsterdam – Home Win

Cristiano Ronaldo may have been quiet in the group stages but he has since been electric for Juventus netting all of their last four goals in this competition and I think he will be the catalyst for the Italian side to claim the win on the night that they will need in order to progress. I think Ajax will find it much harder to break down Juventus on the road than they did Real Madrid and I just feel’s Juventus’ vast experience, especially in defence, will be able to nullify Ajax’s youthful attacking threat. As such, I am expecting a comfortable night for Juventus and for them to progress relatively comfortably.

Bet Analysis: Wednesday 17th April

Manchester City (0) v (1) Tottenham – Home Win

How can you not back Manchester City to win this game after the season that they have had? Admittedly, they were poor by their own lofty standards last week in the first leg but they were a missed penalty away from claiming a draw and heading into this game in a much stronger position. I can easily see Man City grabbing two goals in this game and if they get that I think they will win, but the question is whether that will be enough as even without the injured Harry Kane, Spurs have carried a real threat in this competition on the road. They have won in Dortmund, drawn in Barcelona and I think if they score a goal here, they could well provide the big upset and win this one on away goals, even if they lose on the night.

FC Porto (0) v (2) Liverpool – Away Win

This is the game this week where I think you could make a case for any of the three possible results. Liverpool’s away form in the Champions League isn’t great, losing three of their away group games and their only win being in the last round against Bayern Munich. However, the Reds have lost just six games all season long in all competitions and they haven’t been beaten since losing to Manchester City in January. FC Porto have strong home form but they are playing a much higher level of opposition than they have previously in this tournament this season and Liverpool were also 5-0 winners in this fixture when the teams met in last year’s Round of 16. I can’t see either side going gung ho initially, but I feel when Porto press forward, Liverpool will be able to hit them on the counter and as such, I am backing this one to end in a draw.
