Champions League QF 2nd Leg Acca – 12th 13th April

Well, last week’s Champions League ties started off well enough with both results on Tuesday coming in, but I don’t think too many people foresaw Real Madrid winning quite so comfortably at Chelsea and then to cap it all, Bayern Munich going down to a 1-0 defeat against Villarreal.

So that was a bit disappointing, but it does mean that we now have some very tasty second legs to look forward to this week as we head towards the semifinals and as per usual, I have put together a little fourfold on this week’s action.

Unfortunately, once again, the bets I have backed and which make the most sense (as you will see) are all pretty short odds options and so the returns on this bet are not huge, but I do think it has an outstanding chance of success.

Last week on Tuesday we saw the two Premier League title chasers earn wins in their first leg ties. Man City overcame a dogged and sometimes confrontational performance by Atletico Madrid to earn a 1-0 win thanks to Kevin De Bruyne’s second half striker at the Etihad.

Liverpool though were impressive in beating Benfica 3-1 in Lisbon. The Reds went in front in the first half with goals from Konate and Mane but Darwin Nunez pulled a goal back in the second half. The Reds then withstood some Benfica pressure before Luis Diaz added a third.

Wednesday’s results were more unusual. Chelsea went down 3-1 at home to Real Madrid, Karim Benzema netting another hat-trick as Real made a massive statement with this win and then Villarreal also provided us with a shock as they defeated Bayern Munich 1-0 in a pulsating game, thanks to Danjuma’s early strike.

It all sets up an intriguing set of games this week, with the second set of games from last week being played on Tuesday this week.

Here’s my tips for them all.

Bet Analysis: Tuesday 12th April

Bayern Munich (0) v (1) Villarreal – Home Win

I have to admit that this result last week did surprise me a great deal. It was a fantastic game of football to watch as both sides went for it and in the end it was surprising Villarreal only scored the one goal in what was an open game. Bayern at home though will fancy their chances of turning this around but they’ll be wary. Villarreal were held at home by Juventus in the last round but then beat the Italians 3-0 in Turin. I don’t expect Bayern to suffer the same fate here, but we could well need extra time if they are not at their best. But if they are, as I’d expect them to be, I am backing them to land a comfortable win.

Real Madrid (3) v (1) Chelsea – Home Win

Karim Benzema’s second hat-trick in consecutive Champions League games has put Real in a commanding position in this game and even with Chelsea beating Southampton 6-0 away from home in the run. up to this game, I think that the Spanish side will be huge favourites not just to win the tie, but win this game. Real don’t often lose at home in Europe or domestically and Chelsea’s fragility of late has been clear to see. As such, I am backing Real to come through this tie with a narrow win to earn a semi-final spot.

Bet Analysis: Wednesday 13th April

Atletico Madrid (0) v (1) Manchester City – Away Win

Diego Simeone pulled out some classics from his book of dirty tricks in the game with City last week and I honestly feel that the 1-0 reverse for his team was not a bad result considering how much dominance City had in the game. The problem Atletico now have is that they have to score at least one goal in this game to force extra time while keeping City out and while they may be able to score at home, I think City will have far more space and time to get at the Atletico defence and as such, I’d expect the visitors to come away with a narrow win to make the semi-finals.

Liverpool (3) v (1) Benfica – Home Win

Another fine away performance has put the Reds in the driving seat in this tie, but they won’t want a repeat of their nervy 1-0 home defeat to Inter Milan in the last round of this competition in the home leg. Benfica showed, especially in the second half, that they can trouble Liverpool and they did beat Ajax 1-0 away from home to reach the quarterfinals. However, Liverpool have been so solid in the Champions League this season, winning 8 of their 9 games played so far. In truth, I think Benfica are going to find things very tough at Anfield on Wednesday and I’d expect Liverpool to record a comfortable home win to progress to the semifinals without too many problems.
