Champions League QF Acca – 5th 6th April

The Champions League returns this week with the Quarter Final first leg ties being played across Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by the second legs of those games taking place next week, in what is a quick turnaround for the games.

We also know the draw for the semifinals too, with the winner of the games between Manchester City and Atletico Madrid taking on Chelsea or Real Madrid, while the winner of the Liverpool v Benfica clash will face the victor of the tie between Villarreal and Bayern Munich.

That really offers some intriguing semifinals whoever makes it through from this stage of the tournament and of course, the bookmakers already have their favourites who they think will progress over the two legs to be played over the next week or so.

Tuesday sees Benfica host Liverpool and Manchester City face Atletico Madrid at the Etihad, while Wednesday will see Chelsea face Real Madrid and Villarreal host Bayern Munich.

I already know that I am guaranteed a small profit on the year based on how much I have won in accas already this season, but I would like to add to that amount with another win or two over the next couple of months and hopefully, this set of tips will give me an opportunity to do precisely that.

Don’t get me wrong, there are some tricky results to call in this set of games, but I feel that the selections below offer me a very good opportunity to do precisely that.

Here’s my tips for this week’s Champions League action and remember to check back on Thursday morning for my Europa League quarterfinal tips too.

Bet Analysis: Tuesday 5th April

Benfica v Liverpool – Away Win

The Portuguese side did very well to beat Ajax 1-0 in Amsterdam after a 2-2 first leg draw at home to reach the quarterfinals, where they face a Liverpool side who lost for the first time in the competition at home to Inter, but a 2-0 win in Milan was enough to put Jurgen Klopp’s side through. The visitors have played Portuguese opposition already this season, defeating Porto very easily in the away leg and Benfica will be wary of how well the Reds have played against Portuguese sides of late. There has never been a draw between the two teams in ten matches between them (Liverpool winning six, Benfica four) but at the moment and judging the two sides purely on merit, form and strength, I think you have to back the English side to land a key away win here.

Manchester City v Atletico Madrid – Home Win

Atletico Madrid will face their fifth and sixth games against Premier League opponents in this year’s competition with arguably their toughest test. The visitors lost both legs to Liverpool in the Group Stages, but beat Manchester United away after earning a draw at home in the first leg to progress. However, Manchester City will be a very tough test for Diego Simeone’s men who do come into the game on the back of five straight wins. City though have been in great form in this competition and with Bernardo Silva, have arguably the player who has played most consistently in it this season. Atletico will try and defend their way to a result here, but I can’t see them stopping City from taking a lead into the second leg.

Bet Analysis: Wednesday 6th April

Chelsea v Real Madrid – Home Win

In five games against Real Madrid, Chelsea have never lost, winning three, drawing two and they also knocked out Real from the Champions League last season too. However Thomas Tuchel’s men had a miserable preparation for the game when they were soundly beaten 4-1 at home by Brentford at the weekend. Real’s preparation hasn’t been ideal despite a win at the weekend as they were thrashed 4-0 at home by Barcelona a couple of weeks back. Both these teams will have eyes on reaching the final again and both will feel they can win this, but I think with home advantage Chelsea will take a narrow lead into the second leg at the Bernebeu.

Villarreal v Bayern Munich – Away Win

For me, this is probably the game which is easiest to predict as I can’t see anything other than a Bayern Munich win here. The Bavarians have had a few more blips in results this season than in past years, but their form in the Champions League has generally been excellent. Villarreal won’t be pushovers at all, as their win over Juventus showed in the last round, but I think Bayern are a much more rounded team than the Italians and have so many talented players that they can hurt Villarreal in many different ways. As such, even though they are the away team here, I am expecting the German side to take a lead into the home leg next week.
