Champions League Round of 16 – 1st Leg Pt 2 – 21st & 22nd Feb

Last week only Paris St Germain let us down in our fourfold acca bet, with all the other Champions League ties coming in pretty much bang on the money as I said they would.

It’s frustrating to have another near miss, especially after the weekend, but at least it shows that I’m in good form heading into the busy part of the season and that makes me confident one will land sooner rather than later.

This week we are back with the second part of the Round of 16 first leg games in the Champions League, which sees a repeat of last year’s final, plus two teams that Jose Mourinho managed to victory in this tournament facing off against each other.

Last week, Spurs and Chelsea went down to 1-0 defeats to Milan and Dortmund respectively on the road, while Bayern beat PSG 1-0 in France and Benfica were comfortable 2-0 winners over Club Brugge.

This week we see Liverpool face Real Madrid at Anfield on Tuesday while arguably the most exciting team in the tournament, Napoli face Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany on the same night.

Then on Wednesday night, Manchester City travel to Germany to take on RB Leipzig, while in the other game two sides once managed by Jose Mourinho – Inter Milan and FC Porto, clash at the San Siro.

Let’s now take a look at our tips for this set of Champions League crackers!

Bet Analysis: Tuesday 21st February

Eintracht Frankfurt v Napoli – Draw

For me, there has been no better side in Europe this season than Napoli, so Eintracht Frankfurt are going to have a real job on their hands if they are to get something from this game. The Italian side have lost just once in this tournament so far, away to Liverpool, but they had already qualified and secured the group by then. Frankfurt though are a tough team to beat at home. The Germans have scored three or four goals in their last four home games, which suggests that they could well give Napoli a real run for their money here. The Neapolitans won’t be too worried as their last five Serie A games have seen them concede just two goals, scoring 15 and winning all of those games. Napoli don’t draw too many games, but I think that this is the most likely result here given the strengths of both teams.

Liverpool v Real Madrid – Home Win

Real have been Liverpool’s nemesis in this competition in recent times, winning two finals against the Reds, including last year’s 1-0 win in Paris and this season, Liverpool have looked a pale shadow of the team that almost won it all last year. So a Real win looks on the cards at Anfield if you go on past form. However, Real’s recent form hasn’t been that great in La Liga, losing to Villarreal and Mallorca, as well as drawing at home to Real Sociedad. Liverpool’s poor form is well documented, but an Anfield night against a team the home fans will be itching for revenge against, and you can get that the Reds will be more than up for this game. With Van Dijk, Jota and Firmino likely back too, I am backing the home side to take a narrow lead into the second leg.

Bet Analysis: Wednesday 22nd February

Inter Milan v FC Porto – Draw

Jose Mourinho has guided both these teams to Champions League glory in the past and in the four CL games that they have played against each other, Inter have amassed two wins (both at home) while FC Porto have won one and drawn the other (both in Portugal). Home advantage therefore does seem significant in games between these two. Inter’s recent form sees them with three wins and a draw from their last five,  but FC Porto are in cracking form with five wins in a row, including a win away at Sporting last weekend. In terms of their performances in this competition, I think FC Porto have done slightly better than Inter and I have them as claiming a surprise draw here to set up a tasty second leg.

RB Leipzig v Man City – Away Win

Manchester City have only played RB Leipzig once in the Champions League, losing 2-1 in the Group Stages back in December 2021, but winning the home leg 6-3. After their huge win over Arsenal at the Emirates, City should not be afraid of taking on any team away from home and with Leipzig’s home form of late not looking too great, a 2-1 defeat against Union Berlin being one such example, I think the German side are going to struggle to create too much against this City defence who as a unit have been superb in recent weeks. With Haaland and Mahrez in particularly good form of late and Kevin De Bruyne sensational as always, I think City take a big step to the quarter finals with a win here.
