Champs League Acca: Tue 10th Wed 11th March

We weren’t too far off in our Champions League tips last time, we had a full house on the Tuesday night games, but Wednesday’s let us down a little, although in truth, both matches could have turned out the way I predicted had things gone a little differently. It was one of those nights where clutch moments in the two games just didn’t go the way we needed them to (such as VAR disallowing a Juventus equaliser).

Still, at least that showed we were on the right lines in the Champions League last time out and I am hopeful that these second leg ties (the first leg scores for each game are shown in brackets) should hopefully give us a good chance of landing another acca return here.

Looking at how the first games went, I feel I have to back three home wins as a matter of course, but the interesting one is the Valencia game, which is against an in form Atalanta but the Italian team are not the best travellers and Valencia do have plenty of good experience in Europe. It is worth noting too that they came back from 3-0 down against FC Basel in the Europa League in 2014, winning the home leg 5-0 (after extra time). So that is the game that has given me most thought this week.

Hopefully the Coronavirus won’t affect fans attending these games as that could play a huge role and put the home teams at a big disadvantage, but I’ve assumed they will be in attendance for these tips.

Bet Analysis: Tuesday 10th March

Red Bull Leipzig (1) v (0) Tottenham – Home Win

The German side hold a first leg lead over Spurs heading into the second leg at the Red Bull Arena and truth be told, they were excellent value for that win in London. They had a number of excellent chances very early in the game before Timo Werner’s penalty handed them the win and in truth, Spurs were never really in any danger of causing them too many problems. I can see this being another tough night for Spurs who are on a dismal run of form heading into this game and while I can perhaps see the English side opening up a bit and claiming a goal on the counter, I think Red Bull will win on the night and comfortably win the tie over the two legs. I think Red Bull win this either 2-1 or 3-1.

Valencia (1) v (4) Atalanta – Home Win

In the first leg of this game, the tie was actually far more even than the scoreline suggests. Atalanta had five shots on target and scored four of them, Valencia had four and netted just the once. That clinical nature in front of goal is what has served Atalanta well in their revival in the Champions League and it has also been very evident in Serie A at times, given how freescoring they have been (putting seven past Lecce recently). Valencia though are experienced hands at this and I think Atalanta’s approach will be one of containment, rather than trying to nail the win. I can see Valencia perhaps nicking a 1-0 or 2-1 win, but I think overall the Italian side will progress comfortably into the next round.

Bet Analysis: Wednesday 11th March

Liverpool (0) v (1) Atletico Madrid – Home Win

Liverpool have hit a very rocky patch of form of late and in Atletico Madrid they have a team that look best equipped to take advantage of that and hold onto the 1-0 lead Saul Niguez goal has given them from the first leg. Liverpool dominated against Atletico in terms of possession but created very little and Diego Simeone will want the same again from his team. Anfield though is a very difficult place to go and stop Liverpool scoring. As such, I can see the Reds netting a goal but in truth I am undecided whether they will get any more. I can see either a 1-0 Liverpool win, which would force the game into extra time, or a 2-1 win, which would see Atletico go through on away goals. As such, I am backing a Liverpool win here, but it may yet be in vain in terms of qualification.

Paris St Germain (1) v (2) Borussia Dortmund – Home Win

The first leg between these two teams was a cracker with Braut Haland stealing the show with two superb goals for Dortmund. Paris St Germain though are very strong at home but they could be without Neymar due to a supposed back injury. Even so, the French side have enough quality to win this game. The question is can they do so by enough to go through? I can see Dortmund scoring in France and as such, a 2-1 win for PSG would require extra time and maybe penalties to decide the winner.
