Europa League – Group Stage Week 2 – 4th October 2023

Weirdly, the games that I felt had the better chance of success for me in the first set of Europa League tips this season, didn’t go the way as I thought. Whereas the one game I felt was likely the toughest pick, the Ajax v Marseille draw, actually did turn out that way.

Still, that is how it goes sometimes and I suppose having landed one big win already this season and coming so close on a couple of other occasions, including the Champions League the day before, tye luck has to even itself out somehow.

Anyway, I am back this week with my next set of tips for the Europa League Group Stages and there are some very intriguing games coming up, several involving the British teams competing in this competition.

West Ham got off to a positive start but face a tricky trip to Germany to take on Freiburg who had started the Bundesliga season well but who have not won in their last three games ahead of the weekend.

Rangers also did very well to beat Real Betis last week, against my expectations but they now have a great chance to move onto six points in their group with an away game against Aris Limassol from Cyprus.

Brighton were surprisingly beaten by AEK Athens and they now face a trip to Marseille where they will likely feel they must get something from that game, while Liverpool have a home game against Belgian side Union St-Gilloise.

Let’s now take a look at the four games I have selected for my Europa League accumulator this week.

Europa League Bet Analysis: Thursday 4th October

Aris Limassol v Rangers – Home Win

I have to admit and say I didn’t expect Rangers to beat Real Betis last week, but they did and they now have a great chance to make it six points from six here against an Aris side that are heavily reliant on players from outside of Cyprus. Their star man is on loan Fiorentina striker Aleksandr Kokorin who will be a threat to Rangers here, but i actually feel the way Rangers are set up, actually may well suit them more in the away games in Europe than at home. Strange thing to say with Ibrox behind them I know but I think on the counter Rangers could ne very effective and I think that will take them to the win here.

Marseille v Brighton – Draw

Pretty much everything that could go wrong did go wrong for Brighton on their European tournament debut against AEK Athens. A 3-2 loss, despite twice coming from a goal down to equalise, was not the result the Seagulls wanted and that now means they are going to have to get some positive results on the road against the likes of Marseille, Ajax and AEK in order to progress. They begin in southern France against a Marseille side who were soundly beatem 4-0 by Paris St Germain last weekend and who face a tough trip to Monaco this weekend. That could give Brighton a real chance to pick something up from this game. I can’t see the Seagulls playing as poorly as they did against AEK again, so I am backing them to earn a draw here.

SC Freiburg v West Ham Utd- Home Win

West Ham began their Europa League campaign with a 3-1 come-from-behind win over Backa Topola of Serbia. They now travel to Germany to take on an SC Freiburg team that have hit a bit of rocky form and who lie 9th in the Bundesliga. Don’t be fooled by the German’s relatively low standing – they have been regulars in Europe and have finished comfortably in the European spots in the Bundesliga over the last few years. West Ham’s away form in Europe last season was superb, but Conference League opponents are easier than Europa League opponents and as such, I am backing the home side to come away with a narrow win here.

Toulouse v LASK Linz – Home Win

Toulouse have hit a bit of a rocky form at the moment and after a decent start to their Ligue 1 campaign, they have dropped down to 15th, albeit hey are only 3 points worse off than Le Havre in seventh. LASK Linz started well against Liverpool last time out in this competition, scoring a lovely set piece goal but eventually Liverpool’s class told and the Reds went on to record a solid win. My gut feeling here is that while the current form suggests LASK should be the team to back for a win, I don’t think they are used to playing against the quality of opponent each week that the likes of Toulouse and certainly Liverpool are. They were found out at home against the Reds and I think that will likely happen again on the road in the South of France here.
